can ya help a newbie out? (Remove background)

Postby mikewozowski » Wed Jun 22, 2011 9:04 am

i have just downloaded inkscape and am giving it a try.

my reason for having it is mostly to make files to cut on cricut and also to make designs for screen printing.

so, this is what i want to do.

make an "A" sticker to put on my car window.

found a picture online of a flag with the A i want (university of alabama A)

so i opened that jog and then i did the "trace bitmap". that seemed to work ok. but i am not sure what to do next. i want to keep the A but delete the rest. can someone give me a hint about what to do next?

thank you for your help.

Welcome mike!

I wrote a sort of article/collection of tutorials (in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6616) a while back. If you'll scroll down to the last half, to the section called Rendering (a term often used in the raster graphics community for doing what you want to do)(Inkscape is a vector graphics program) there are 2 mini-tutorials in which I used a picture of an owl to illustrate. One of them uses a special feature of the Trace Bitmap dialog, and is much easier (SIOX). If the background is either too busy of a pattern, or too dark, it won't work very well. In that case, the other one can be used. It takes longer because you have to trace the item (your A) "by hand".

Those are the best ways I know about to remove a background. Let us know if you run into any trouble :D

PS -- I edited your title, to help get you better replies.
