Hi,
I am trying to re-colour an image from a PDF file wich is imported to inkscape as one single very large object.
I want to recolour the different sections in different colours without having to convert to a rastered image.
How do I select areas that are smaller than the entire object for recolouring?

Hhhmm.....I may not be the right person to answer this, but I might be able to help. Is the image from the PDF file actually in the PDF format....because I think it's possible to have, for example, a JPG image inserted into a PDF file. So the first thing we need to know, is the format of the image. (Right-click on the image in the PDF file, or right-click > Properties from your file manager (if you're in Windows).) If it's in any raster format (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc.), then you'll have to "vectorize" it, before you can use Inkscape to edit it. You could do that with Path menu > Trace Bitmap. Although, if it's a fairly simple image, you might be better off drawing it fresh. After tracing (or drawing), then you'll be able to select individual objects/paths. If it's a fairly complex image, like a family photo for example, you'd probably be better off using a raster graphics program to edit. And if it's already in a vector format (which PDF is) you should be able to select individual objects/paths already.
