How to create realistic pen drawing?

Postby etrader » Tue Jul 21, 2015 6:15 am

When writing/drawing by pen/pencil, the line is not perfect (like a computer generated line) due to the paper texture and pen pressure.

How to draw a line or write something that look like a scanned paper when it is zoomed.

Note that I do not mean low-pressure at the beginning or end of a line. I am referring to the imperfection of line/writing in real world.

To clarify my question, how to create the attached signature in Inkscape from scratch?

You could use a filter like Distort -> Roughen and then mask everything with a grunge texture to get the fading look of the colours.

That is already a scratch, you don't need it to be any more "not scratch" right?

There are a couple of tricks how to mimic a look alike -as well as topics on covering it*-, but it depends on what you need it for, where you are going to use it, what you can consider a close match.

Do you want it for printing in large format?

*some related topics:
charcoal vectors
chalk effect
crayon texture
sketch effect
sketch it up
hatches
distressed background
roughened stroke
distressed paint

Oh and again I can't find the exact topic where drawing pen strokes with blue ink was discussed. Though it was more about varying the thickness of the stroke at the start-end, caused by pressure change as far as I can remember.

use a filter.

chalk and sponge is a good start

Then add another turbulence effect to mimic a random pattern to fill your stroke

Anyone still looking for pen filters, check this.

Great work !

Just looking at one of the strokes in the filter editor and its incredible how many stacked effects are needed.
I have no idea how to ever learn that.

Wonder if it makes a difference how many effects you have, when it comes to rendering time.
Also: why did you choose such big dimensions for the general settings ?

Thank's!

Wouldn't say those were too complicated though, just compositing and "morphing" with the turbulence here and there.
Sure it can be learnt in no time, since it works almost as in gimp -Like "add a bit more roughen here, add some masking there".

It definitely adds up, however there are differenes between the primitives.

The blend, color matrix, component transfer, composite, flood, image, merge, offset are not costing much resources.
It is the blurring, diffuse lighting and similar that takes up most of the rendering time.

Im currently trying to delete a few of the effects.
It seems, its possible to take some of them away, without much difference.

Speaking of rendering time and stacked primitives, made this one a few days ago and now I can hardly remember where to edit it for adding more of the reflected light at the bottom.
Would need changing blurring radius, offset value -and hopefully an added color matrix- somewhere in between.
