how to scale part of a shape?

Postby InkCat » Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:14 am

let's say you have some shape like a rectangle and would like to scale one end of it. how would you do this, aside from manually eyeballing it and moving the nodes by hand?

thanks!

A rectangle would have to be converted to path first. All paths can have parts scaled by using the node tool, selecting the nodes in the area you want scaled, and using the transform arrows to scale, shear, rotate etc. Results range from startling to useful/expected. more complex scalings use the envelope and perspective extensions and path effects. Recent Inkscape v's have the ability to scale two different paths at the same time. Using control and shift while scaling is also possible and quite useful. Converting nodes to auto smooth is also sometimes desirable.
Hope this answers your q.

Thanks, druban, but when I do this, I am not presented with transform arrows. I see that the nodes I selected are highlighted, in this case, Blue, but there are no transform arrows to be seen, either for the selected nodes or for the entire shape.

is it possible that there's another step I need to follow in order to get the tranform arrows?

  1. You need Inkscape 0.48
  2. activate the 3rd button from the right on the node tool controls bar ("Show Transform Handles")

ah...so you do and so they are there!

I get the transform handles, but I still can't get just THAT portion of my shape to scale up or down...trying the handles, also trying the Transform palette...

Never mind...just discovered that using Shift enables this....

thank you!
