How can I give an eps image a transparent background?

Postby kearnine » Fri Apr 23, 2010 8:53 am

My brother created a logo for me and sent it as an eps. How can I pull that into Inkscape to make its background transparent? Thanks...

You have to install ghostscript. you have to add the path to ghostscript to your system (if you are on windows). Then the eps should open in inkscape and can be edited.

Or you can post it here and someone can just convert it to SVG for you if it is just a one time thing.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Thanks, druban. I use Inkscape on a Mac. I downloaded the Mac Ghostscript files, but can't make heads nor tails out of what to do with them. Instructions are written in computer programer-ease...

Here is what is supposed to be the logo image uploaded to Imageshack. The logo doesn't show up for me in imageshack, but it says the upload was successful.

If that doesn't work, can someone tell me how I can post my .eps logo image here to have it made into an svg file?

Seems strange that this is such a hard thing to do. Isn't it an extremely common need people have--a vector image with a transparent background?

Probably the reason you don't see an image after uploading to ImageShack, is that it's not an image file, I don't think. It's MP4, which if I'm not mistaken is a music or audio file...or maybe a movie file. When you upload your EPS file the last part of the URL should be ".eps" without the quotes.

Yes! In fact, images created originally in Inkscape have a transparent background by default. You actually have to do something to make it non-transparent. But it's the conversion from EPS, where the background isn't transparent, that's the problem. To be honest, I don't know why GS is necessary. That's why I'm following this topic, always trying to learn more

You can upload images directly into your message. Before you submit your message, please look just below the Save, Preview, Submit buttons. There are 2 tabs, click Upload Attachment, Browse to find your file (EPS file), click Add the file. Then when you're finished typing your message, click Submit. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if EPS is allowed. But it won't hurt anything to try anyway. If you get a red error message saying the filetype isn't allowed, you could just go back to ImageShack and upload the EPS.

I'm sure druban will be back shortly to help you with the Ghostscript part.
