Inkscape and Adobe Indesign

Postby Brother Gabriel » Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:33 am

Greetings!
This is my first post on this forum. I have been using Inkscape now for many months. I like it much better than Freehand which I was using before. Inkscape is easier to use. I have an issue however. I like to export my Inskape vectors as emf files and then "place" them with Indesign. This works. What doesn't *always* (about half of the time) work is when Indesign exports the file to pdf: sometimes the Inkscape emf only half shows up in the pdf. I'll get half a drawing cut off as if the program decided to quit partway through. Now I made one Indesign export like this with 5 different Inkscape emf vectors in it, and only one of them didn't work. I even tried embedding the emf in the Indesign file before export. I know the problem lies in the emf file; because if I export the Inkscape file as a tiff file, it works just fine. Does anyone have any light on this matter?

Thanks!
Brother Gabriel-Marie

Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy it here!

Im not so much into emf format so I can't help with your issue directly, here are some bugs associated with emf:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/169074
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168530
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168610

If your issue is something new you should submit a new bug, that would mean a lot to developers and help them debug the problem.

Vector formats are complicated formats so it's often safest to export to a bitmap format such as TIFF. Having said that, I would be using EPS instead of EMF - is there a reason you chose EMF? If you're using a development version of 0.46 saving as PDF is also a very good option - don't bother saving as PDF with 0.45 as I beleive it rasterises the entire drawing.

Hey, thanks for the info.

I was using emf files because it was a vector format that Inkscape could reopen and reedit, and because I could place the file with Indesign. I recently found out however through a friend of mine who told me -as you are telling me- that eps is the way to go for vector.

Now, as far as bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168530, I have had this problem also repeatedly where Inkscape crashes while opening the emf. I think I am using .45.1. My bug is a new one then; I will gladly contribute to Inkscape's development.

Thanks for the time!
