There is an experimental version of Inkscape with mesh gradients which would let you acheive what you want, but (a) it's experimental and (b) the syntax for mesh gradients hasn't yet been ratified by the SVG working group (it should be in SVG 2.0 in a year or two), so future versions of Inkscape may not read files created with it right now.

Alternatively your best bet is probably to use blurred highlights/shadows with clipping to simulate the gradient you want. See my latest Inkscape tutorial in Full Circle Magazine (it's a free download, http://fullcirclemagazine.org/issue-73/ ) which is all about clipping, and shows a simple example of simulating a conical gradient in this way.

Blurring and clipping, and maybe some masking too.
Quick example attached.

yes..i am coming from Illustrator, beside missing mesh gradients, i miss those smooth transitioning gradients..

Can you help me with the Experimental VERSION..if its available for download?

Thank you

To be honest I really wouldn't go anywhere near the experimental version - it was mainly created as a proof of concept and to help the SVG working group decide on a syntax for mesh gradients. Trying to use a hacked together experimental build for any sort of production use is likely to lead to frustration and a misleading view of Inkscape.

If you really want to give it a go, though, this page has links to the branch and some build instructions: http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entr ... n-inkscape

If you're coming from Illustrator then I guess you're on a Mac; I don't know whether anyone has made Mac builds of this branch generally available for download, so building from source might be your only option if you really, really want to try it.

Just as an fyi - I had downloaded the experimental mesh gradient version of Inkscape and couldn't get it to work... so it might not even be worth trying. If it does work, I'm wondering if it could even be converted to another extension and be stable in an end file (like jpg or eps for example). I have enough trouble with the usual stuff, lol. good luck.

Hello
A gradient mesh could it be just an interpolation of a shape's fill color following a path. Maybe it's possible to do a python extension taking as base previous path's extensions.

EDIT: Maybe this doesn't solve your request but i've posted a trick tutorial about simulating a curved gradient:
