[solved] Text overlap problem

Postby kimbertx » Sat Mar 22, 2008 2:04 am

Whenever I use a text font that has swirls that overlap part of the letters or some cursive fonts, I don't know how to weld it all together to become solid for cutting purposes. I've tried converting the text to a path and then using "union", but aparently I'm not doing something right. Can anyone help?

Can you post an example of the font your trying to use?

you can use kerning, get your cursor in between the letters that are too close and use Alt + right arrow
just hand over the chocolate and nobody gets hurt

I am not trying to adjust the spacing of the letters, I am trying to make the overlapping parts of the letters become one solid piece so that if you were cutting out the letter you would continue around all parts of the letter without crossing back and forth over the top of the letter. Does that make more sense? In another program I've used it is called welding. In this program I think it has to do with "union" command under the "path" tab, but I can't make it happen properly. It happens in all fonts that have letters that have a swirl that doubles back over itself, for example it happens with the capital E and the capital S in "Edwardian Script"; or on many of the letters, especially capitals, in "Scriptina" or in "Vivaldi".

Yes, but the letters should already be like that. At least, I've never seen a TrueType or Type 1 font where they weren't.

for example it happens with the capital E and the capital S in "Edwardian Script"

I've just checked that font, and the E and S are already "welded", which you can see by turning off the fill and adding a thin stroke.

You still need to convert the text to a path and take the union, in order to deal with letters that cross other letters. Are you sure this doesn't work? (Again, you can see the effect most clearly if you remove the fill and add a thin stroke.)

I gave it a go:

Each word, converted to path and ungrouped
Selected the glyph objects that overlap and Menu: Path>union.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
