'SOLVED' 3D text

Postby Janne » Sat Feb 21, 2015 5:29 am

Hi all

I'm sorry but I am opening a new topic on this because I have encountered different problem that should be treated differently from my previous topic on 3D text: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=18423

This goes out to Espermaschine who provided me with a detailed tutorial on how to do what I want to do.

I have allowed myself to attach Espermashine's explanation together with my comments in the file for better understanding.

Please bare with me :)

Hi.

That brings back memories when I made a tutorial on a whack graffiti piece to show how to add a 1-point perspective depth to the letters years ago.
Maybe the idea could be generalised.

Still...
Such framing just works to keep the eye off from the type design.
Good type can stand alone and remain effective.

@Janne
not sure whats going on

what i did not explain is: before you even begin, you convert your text to a path

so type your text,
convert to a path (CTRL + Shift + C)
Ungroup (CTRL + Shift + G)
Combine (CTRL + K)

BUT, i tried the same procedure without converting the text into a path, and it still worked for me...
the Union worked, and the Difference

so i have no idea why its not working on your side

really the whole 3D im doing is a boolean operation, extracting the extrusion

Some notes on the subject.

With all the boolean operations you will produce some rendering issue gaps in between the shapes, maybe not necessary to have.
Once you have a path the shape of the path extruded -front face and sides- it might even work if you use that path as a clipping object for the fill of the sides and put the text (front face) above.

To fit in the one point perspective, the gradient steps would look better wanishing too. Meaning conical gradients would make a better use.
Which needs other compromises.

What could go wrong with the booleans? They tend not to like object sharing the same segments.
Some cases it can even delete a path by union (0.48) -combining subpaths before may help.
Or that the text characters are converted to open paths? Maybe if you merge the double nodes before it can work.

Agreed - but it's still nice to know how...

Been there, done that - but no, it doesn't work, Espermaschine. I'll try again tomorrow :)

Good idea using clipping.
Nodes were merged!
I've really tried everything :)

Clipping might be the answer - I'll try that tomorrow too :)

Hi

Make sure the text is selected in object mode (F1) before applying the keystrokes.

Hi Ragnar - not sure about what 'object mode' is - F1 doesn't do anything.

Finally worked my way out of this - thank you, everybody.
It sure is kind of complicated in my opinion :)

Press F1 - then select your object to get into "object edit" mode.
Press F2 - then your object to get into "node edit" mode.
