Fill shape with image

Postby kungfuoctopus » Tue Jun 15, 2010 7:17 pm

Hi

I’ve been using Inkscape for quite a while, but up until now have never found the need to fill a created shape (Square/circle/freehand) and so on with an image, for example:

Instead of filling a shape with a colour or texture, fill the image with a jpg/bmp image (texture, fire, bricks) not exceeding the boundary of the shape.

See below example:

Select the bitmap file and convert it to a pattern (Object > Pattern > Objects to Pattern), they you'll be able to select it from the pattern list.

Alternatively, depending on your specific needs, you can use the shape as a clipping path to the bitmap image.

Load the bitmap into Inkscape (drag and drop should work), put your empty shape on top of it, select both then use the Object=>Clip=>Set menu item (it's also on the context menu).
