How to create an outline around the image

Postby rwig » Sun Feb 05, 2017 1:05 pm

I've traced an image:

Now I'd like to create an outline around the image that is a bit wider stroke. I've tried Path > Trace Bitmap but it doesn't do anything. How can I create an outline around this image?

Hi.

The screenshot doesn't show what kind of object is your image built up of.
Assuming it's a group of paths with strokes and with no fill.

Then it would go:
  1. duplicate group (Ctrl+D)
  2. ungroup object (Ctrl+Shift+G)
  3. combine paths (Ctrl+K)
  4. convert strokes to paths (Ctrl+Alt+C)
  5. break path apart (Ctrl+Shift+K)
  6. add objects together (Ctrl++) or deselect the largest path and delete the rest (Del)
  7. add a wider stroke to the path
  8. [move path to the bottom (End)[/list]

In a nutshell.
If you don't want the wider stroke to be rendered inside, in 0.92 you can add a white fill and set rendering order in the fill and stroke tab so that the stroke is below the fill.
Previous versions needed two paths for that effect -one with fill only above one with a stroke.

Thank you for replying. My image is in different groups right now.

Should I bring it all together by selecting Object > Group?
or should I bring it all together by selecting Path > Stroke to path, and then Union.

I have done both steps before but am unsure the right one?
