HI guys , I like cartoons like everybody I guess.
As I`m not little boy anymore I don` t have too much time for spend time in front of the Tv but I remember a lots of nice cartoons.
Can we draw our cartoon with Inkscape??
I think drawing our favourite cartoon would be a good way for remember our childhood time.

Anime,disney stuff, simpson , robot figures.... all are welcome.
Only one rules please feel free to drawing not time-limited anyone can post at any time.

Yeah I remember Woody. What an annoying laugh he had.....although I loved it when I was a kid I'm not sure if you're interested in changing it, llogg? But if so, might I suggest heavier strokes (the black strokes)? He has such a bold posture there, and I wonder if a heavier stroke might help him to "pop"?

I don't think Tiger Man was broadcast in the U.S. Or maybe it was a comic book character? The image slightly reminds me of Jungle Book (a book and much later, a movie (probably Disney)....not sure if it was ever a cartoon series....maybe....???) But I'm not familiar with Tiger Man

I couldn't draw an original cartoon to save my life....unless stick-people counted, lol But your images have inspired me, and I think I might search out an image of a favorite cartoon, to try and replicate it with Inkscape. Hey, would it be photorealism to replicate a cartoon image?

Of course I'm still trying to get the 2nd half of my apartment painted, so won't be able to do it right away. But I'm inspired

updated. I just did a union of all the paths making up the bird, linked offset it and filled it black and pushed it behind the bird.

Anyway.. Tiger man was very popular even on early 90s. I'm from 89, and i remember watching it when i was 4 or 5.

Well if spaventapasseri hadn't named them, I wouldn't have known. It looks very familiar, and I would have known it was a children's cartoon. But I couldn't have named it. Just before I scrolled far enough to read spavent.'s reply, I was thinking Dragonball Z I guess that tells you my age...or worse, my era Very nice work though! It's like I could reach out and pick one up!

I finally have drawn a favorite cartoon. This is "My Tweety Pie, the original Tweet!" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweety)

I did not draw it freehand (because I don't possess the skills), but it is 100% Inkscape. I traced the main figure ("by hand" using the Pen tool) and applied colors that appeal to me. As you will see from the original (below) I did change the curtains. It appears that the image I used for my original/model, is not an original Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies creation entirely. It looks like the bird is original, and the lines of the curtains came from the bird cage (which keeps him safe from the "putty tat"), and that someone used those lines conveniently to create curtains. (There were several images like this on the site where I found it, where the original cartoon was used as a base for holiday greeting cards, or something like that. But I don't think the owner of the site is the owner of the image. So I can't reference the artist.)(However, I'm sure copyrights have expired on the cartooon, by now.)

Anyway, I used the bottom line of the curtains from the original, but straightened out the upper parts to look more like a stage curtain. And I chose similar, but brighter, more saturated colors. Compared to the original raster, I really like the clean, crisp lines of the vector, and bright, clear colors! The only thing I don't like is that the strokes of the vector are obviously not as nice as the pen/pencil strokes of the original. I wish there were an extension that would make regular strokes appear like pen/pencil strokes, tapered out towards the pointed ends -- something like the Hatches LPE, only applied to the ends of the strokes. Well, we can dream, right, lol.

So after I finished with my version, I decided to challenge myself to exactly reproduce the image, as closely as possible. Here is that attempt, on the left, with the original model image on the right.



I don't like the microphone, which was clearly added in by the secondary artist. So I've left that out. And I didn't want to take the time to draw the hearts on the curtains, so I just used a polka dot pattern fill instead. Again, the blunt ends of the stroke are a negative. But I also didn't want to take the time to convert strokes to paths, and node edit to create the tapered pen/pencil stroke.

Actually Snoopy and Woodstock were my first idea for this, but they would be fairly easy for me, since I would be tracing them as well. This Tweety Bird image was pretty easy too, but the curtain did present a bit of a challenge. It was fun to do though, even if there wasn't much new to learn. I might come back to this topic at some future time, with another favorite cartoon too. I really was fun!

I'm fairly new here but I must say that I'm absolutely amazed at the works I'm seeing people show off around here. In fact, some of the stuff I see here is far superior to anything I seem to be able to create. However, I'm learning quickly and hope to compare to some of the fine folks here one day soon. So when I ran across this thread, I decided I would finish up my SpongeBob that I had started awhile back because of a funny little story.....

You see, I have a brother that I take care of who has Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy and a little Mental Retardation that absolutely LOVES SpongeBob. He loves SpongeBob so much that his walls, tables, dressers, etc. are all covered in all kinds of SpongeBob paraphenelia. Well, one day he was trying to understand how cartoons work since they aren't "Real" even though there is a character voice, he's on TV, etc. You see at one time he really thought that SpongeBob was the real deal, as in a walking, talking, Living Sea Sponge (he tends to blur reality with whatever is on TV sometimes).

So he was asking me about it and arguing with me that SpongeBob is a Real Person and not just a cartoon character with a voice. He was getting quite upset with me for telling him that SpongeBob is NOT real and is only a cartoon character, etc. So rather than trying to explain it to him in words alone, I found a How-To Draw SpongeBob tutorial and commenced to showing him that anyone can draw SpongeBob (or any cartoon for that matter), but it doesn't make him come to life in real life, etc. The conversation went much further than that, but I'm fairly certain that you fine folks don't need to be told how a cartoon works. LOL

Anyway, here's the final result of the somewhat strange situation between my brother and I.



While making this graphic I used a couple of tutorials which are linked to within the graphic itself. Namely, I took one to learn how to make bubbles, which can be found here: http://ryanler.wordpress.com/2007/02/16/simple-bubble-in-inkscape-orb-ball-bubble/

I learned how to make bubbles from the tutorial linked to above and then put my own touch on them for the final result (much more could be done, but it's very time consuming, considering I'm fairly new to Inkscape).

and I took a How-To Draw SpongeBob tutorial which I had to adapt for Inkscape, but inspiration for my SpongeBob was drawn from the following tutorial:

For the Shading, I used a few filter effects from a dropshadow filter Ivan Louette created which is also linked to within the file and can be found at OpenClipArt.org here:

In fact, the two splatters on the upper left and lower right corners of the graphic is the graphic with the filters I used for the shading of SpongeBob.

The method used here was to actually adapt the how-to tutorial for Inkscape and draw away, following the step-by-step procedure.

I started out by making myself little guides (as shown on the tutorial site) and then making circles and squares, turning them into paths for manual editing. Adapting it for Inkscape was a little different than the actual tutorial as I used more squares than the one main square shown on the site, but it was fairly simple to adapt. I used the eyeball method for a rough draft and then dropped the image from the tutorial inside Inkscape for manual adjustment of all edges, holes, etc.

So it's not really traced, but I did use the tutorial graphic as a guide and plumed everything up so close as to make it seem as if it is traced. In fact, I've had several people accuse me of simply swiping the graphic and claiming it as my own, but nothing could be further from the truth. I spent countless hours on this graphic within Inkscape. For me, drawing it by hand is MUCH, MUCH easier or at least FASTER than doing it in Inkscape but I imagine that has a lot to do with the fact that I'm just now taking Inkscape seriously and trying to learn it inside and out whereas I've been drawing with pencils and pens most of my life.

Anyway, what do you all think of my first Cartoon Character ever made completely within Inkscape?

For me, drawing it by hand is MUCH, MUCH easier or at least FASTER than doing it in Inkscape but I imagine that has a lot to do with the fact that I'm just now taking Inkscape seriously and trying to learn it inside and out whereas I've been drawing with pencils and pens most of my life.

Many people use a graphics tablet with Inkscape. This allows them to use their god-given skills to draw by hand, plus take advantage of Inkscape's awesome tools!

Maybe is true there`s nothing new to learn with this post , but as I wrote I like to remember our childhood time and Tweety was part of me as well...

Actually, my brother was of great help with getting SpongeBob correct. You see, the tutorial had a couple of things wrong... like his tie and his chin. Aaron seen the discrepancies right away and brought up a couple of his SpongeBob pillows to prove it to me.

Anyway, I'd love to try to use a tablet with Inkscape, but alas I don't have one. There are a couple of graphics I'm working on that I drew and want to transfer to vectors but my only method right now is to take a picture of the graphic with my digital camera, bring it into Inkscape and go from there. What I've been finding quite difficult, er... maybe just more time consuming than difficult is trying to make Celtic Knotwork. The over, under, over, under pattern of knotworking seems to be a bit of a pain to bring to life within Inkscape. I'm curious how that would work with a tablet.

I once used a very cool program called RealDraw Pro that was awesome for this kind of stuff because it allows you to select portions of your artwork to push behind other areas. Even though Inkscape has layers and sublayers, etc. the same effect cannot be applied in the same way because it pushes the entire object down a layer instead of just a selected portion of said object. I hope that makes sense. I'd link to a site showing that feature but it seems they've completely redesigned the website and the tutorial showing this feature seems to be missing now (or I just can't find it).Oh, wait here's a youtube video that shows the effect.

This has got to be one of the main things I miss about RealDraw compared to Inkscape (though the lighting functionality is awesome too). In fact, RealDraw Pro has a ton of really cool features and I'm surprised it's not more popular than it is, but most people I know have never even heard of it. As for me, I've been trying to completely ween myself off of the WIndows Operating System with preference to Ubuntu, which is in fact what lead me to Inkscape in the first place.

Anyway, it's definitely worth a look for Windows users who don't wanna cough up the money Adobe wants for their products, but wants a little more control than what Inkscape offers.

I think maybe the biggest annoyance is that I don't think it supports SVG, of course I'm not positive on this as I never used SVG until Inkscape, but it would be a shame to have such a nice Vector program that doesn't support SVG natively.

Okay, sorry for the off topic info here, but I've been really frustrated trying to do knotwork in Inkscape which is SO VERY EASY to do in RealDraw.

Thanks for liking my SpongeBob and the Bubbles. The Bubbles are actually extremely easy to make following the tutorial I linked to. But to make them more realistic would take a bit of time and lots of adjusting, especially if you want to have more than one shape for your bubbles. I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist at times and decided that I would let the bubbles slide as is (for now) else I'd be spending many, many hours working on nothing but bubbles. As for the tablet idea, I'd love to try one, but as mentioned to Brynn, I don't currently have one.

The old style Mickey Mouse -- you don't see that very often anymore. It works very well with the texture, which kind of looks like old, or handmade paper, or maybe even newsprint. I think you must have found a fairly rare version, even of this old style of Mickey. I don't really remember one with the....tall cap (not sure what to call it).
