I can draw a square on my canvas in Inkscape
But I'm unable to put some text in it.
How to that?

In other words:
I have:





I tried:
- Typing text Jeri
- Selected the square and the text jeri
- Pressed ALT-W
- And then the text is connected to the square, I don't see the text, it seems to be "behind" the square.

Instead of alt+w, just group the text with the box (Ctrl +g). Before that, align (Ctrl + Shift + A) the text with the box

Why to draw a square separately?
It's not necessary.
You can use the text tool to drag the corners of the bounding box just as a rectangle.
Use the snap to cusp nodes and position those corners over the square drawn before if you need that exact shape.
