Long Text

Postby ait » Thu Jun 26, 2014 10:53 pm

Hello,
I'm having trouble typing in, say, a paragraph into inkscape.
When I try to create a text box, the text still types on one line.
To get to a second line I have to manually stop, create a new line (make sure the spacing is right) and start again. [If you press enter, like you might do in a word processing program, you are taken back to the beginning of the original line.]

Obviously this is very tedious, especially if you have multiple lines.

There MUST be a way to type text, press enter and be automatically taken to the next line which is automatically spaced correctly for you. (although I haven't found it yet...and yes, I've done some searches...)

Any help would be much appreciated.

thank you

Hi.

This is not the behavior on my system.
(Using Dev version 0.48 - 13438)

When creating text click the text tool or press F8,
then draw a text box by click-drag.
Type your text and it will automatically 'flow' into the box you created.
The size of the box can be adjusted after the text is entered.
(If the outline of box turns red as you type all text is not shown, you have to enlarge the box.)

See here; http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Text-Creating.html

If you still have problems please revert with your inkscape version and Operating System on your machine.

Good Luck

Dear Ragnar
thank you answering...
I had looked at the reference you mentioned...
however, even when I follow your instructions the carriage return brings the cursor back to the line.

So...I'm still struggling...
any thoughts on if I maybe inadvertently clicked a setting to make this happen?
thanks

Hi.

Try to 'reset' Inkscape to 'factory setting' by deleting (or renaming) the 'preferences.xml' file.
A new file will be created by inkscape next time it's started.

Depending on your OS (which you did not state! ;-) )
If you still have problems please revert with your inkscape version and Operating System on your machine.

the file can be in different locations,
on my Win7 system it's in 'C:\Users\Ragnar\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\'

To my incredible joy (and surprise) I submitted a "bug" on the official inkscape bug page and received a reply which worked!!!

See the response below:

Hi, you need to set the line spacing in the text toolbar back to 1. I've attached a picture in case you can't find it.

** Attachment added: "line-spacing.png"

But thank you to everyone who gave suggestions..I appreciate it!!
