Edit Text in a Vector Image.

Postby Pennywhistle » Mon Aug 12, 2013 10:00 am

Hi all,

I am new to Inkscape and programs like this in general so am struggling a little bit in trying to work out how to edit some text in a pre designed logo that I downloaded from a freevector website. It is an EPS file that I convert to the Inkscape format using Scribus. I then open the image (it contains a 'sheet' with lots of logos on it) and ungroup the sheet. I then shift select the logo I want on the sheet and copy paste it into a new file. From there I can edit things like colour / shapes which is wonderful! But the main thing I want to do is edit the text. I select the Text tool and hover over the letters but the blue box doesn't come up. I then use the select tool and I can select each letter individually but I can't 'tyoe' text as such, just delete / move / change colours like it's an object and not text. I hope I have explained it clearly so it makes some degree of sense! I have scoured the boards and the net for answers and the best I can come up with is that it seems the text was 'ungrouped' or something along those lines when the original creator made it, and now it's no longer text but each letter is an individual object. Can people confirm? Or suggest ways to 'regroup' if possible? (I know that's asking alot of my computer!! haha). Or could it be associated with it being an EPS file and i'm using Inkscape (which I love btw!) to open it? I have considered just deleting the 'object text', typing my own and fitting the text to a circular path that already exists. But of course, I was hoping for a quick and easy answer and fix if it's out there! Also, the solution of me typing new text will only work for some (and I have youtubed to find out tips on how to!), but others that I want to possibly use on a blog where the logo (and by logo I mean more like a saying that you insert over a photo with a little squiggly hand drawn graphic) is soley a cool looking font with a little picture will be painful as if i delete the text, then nothing will be left but the little squiggly line and I forsee it being difficult to replicate the font!! :D If anyone has a solution or more information to add to help me out I would love to hear. Thanks. Leah.

Welcome aboard!

If the letters have been converted to paths there is not much you can do.
Still if it was a text, the font may not have been embedded in the file.
So with the current svg you have there are characters missing of the original font, and
the kerning informations, baseline, ligatures and such.
You cannot reproduce the exact same font file from that.
You may create an svg font out of it, convert it to ttf, but why would you do that?
To write down the exact same word?

Thanks Lazur URH. Yep, I thought that might be the issue. Bummer!! And of course as you say, there is no point in creating a font out of what I already ahve because that will defeat the purpose of changing the word. Grrrrrrrrrr. Hopefully I will get the chance to sit down and figure out how to properly Inkscape to edit the images etc as I think it's a great program with lots of potential for me. It's finding time with an 8 month old that's teething that's the problem! :D
