I'm new to this forum but have been using Inkscape for about a year. What I am trying to do is strange. I am making decals for fishing rods and need to allow the rod color to be seen through the decal in certain areas. For instance, I am making a Marine Corp rod for a Vet and want the words US Marine Corps to show through the red background on the decal. I have painted the part of the rod under the decal in gold leaf paint, so the words Marine Corps will show up in Gold surrounded by the red background on the rest of the decal.
I want to do this because it is so difficult to make a metalic color in any graphics program, much easier to use metalic paint then "cut" the letters out of the background so the letters show up in the metalic color painted on the rod.
I hope this is possible, otherwise I'll have to come up with another idea.
Thanks in advance for any help. If there is a text or tutorial, I have missed it mainly because I'm not sure what to look for in the search.

Hiya,
Text can be placed over an object and path operation (Menu>Path>Difference ) can be used to cut the text out of the object.
Red object with text cutout, gradient rectangle behind.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Many thanks, I thought it was something like that.
