change text in saved SVG file

Postby rubins » Tue Jun 19, 2012 6:16 pm

Hello,
A few months ago I made a flyer with Inkscape. It work out perfect.
I saved it as a SVG file. Now, I want to use it again for a new flyer.
But I cannot change the text. What happened?
Thanks and regards, rubins

Ah yes, rubins, I remember you :D

Hhhmmm....you're sure you opened the SVG file, and not a PNG (that you may have exported)?

If you're sure you have the right file, I'm thinking that there might have been some reason why you needed to convert the text to path. Maybe you used Pattern Along Path, or Perspective, or a few other possibilities? Once the text is converted to path, it cannot be changed back to text again. Usually I suggest saving a copy of the text, still as text, before converting to path. It can be saved outside the page border, or on a hidden layer, if you ever need to edit the file.

If you select the text with the Node tool, and you see a bunch of nodes (tiny squares and diamond shapes) then it was apparently converted to paths. And you'll have to type new text.

Or maybe you have the text grouped with something else? Pay attention to the status bar when you select it with Selection tool. Does it say "Group of...." If so, you can click Ungroup. Does it say "Path (x number of nodes)...." If so, I've already covered paths. Does it say "Text (font, size)...."? If it says Text, then you should be able to use the Text tool to change it.

If it says anything else, let us know :D

you will get that all the time that all elements are grouped (automatically) when you save as plain svg instead of native (extended) inkscape svg.
