A Rose - colours

Postby microUgly » Sun Mar 09, 2008 9:30 am

I'm doing the colours only. Lines are by Sythe01 and are available here - http://sythe01.deviantart.com/art/Line- ... e-51796474

The pencils haven't been vectorised - they remain as a bitmap.

The style of colouring on her face isn't what I originally had in mind, and I'm not sure I like it. More so, I'm concerned that I won't be able to pull off that style for the rest of her. The colouring is layers of blurred shapes. In the past I've only ever used gradients when colouring creating a more cartoon look. I wouldn't consider her face finished yet.

I should say now that I'm using Rust2D's photos as a reference for colouring and lighting.

I really wish Inkscape supported named colours.

Hi,

It's looking great so far, I can see it turning into something really good.

As for the face, I like it. I think that way you have drawn the eyes isn't consistent with the way you've drawn the face - they look cartoony - maybe that's why you don't like the face? (I still think the eyes look fantastic, just a different style from the face!)

The hair looks like it's going to turn out really well too.

You're right, it will be heard to draw the rest of her like you have done her face, but that's not a bad thing! If you pull it off it'll look amazing, if not - at least you learn a little :)

P.s. I like the way you've drawn your sig.

Thanks for the feedback. Her eyes definitely need toning down. Looking at it again, I think if I add a little more detail and tweak the colours some more it might satisfy me.

That's actually the original artists sig, not mine. Although, since you brought it up, I think you sig is sweet :)

For reference, I grew bored with colouring this in Inkscape and have switched over to colouring it in GIMP - http://microugly.deviantart.com/art/A-R ... -104100495

We need a cover charge and at two drink minimum for the forum! :o Nice job in gimp. Seems like the raster graphics program still have the lead in subtlety of shading images.

Yeah, I did that colouring in GIMP in the same amount of time as it took me to do that small amount of colouring in Inkscape I posted originally.

That doesn't hilight any fault with Inkscape though. It's just about using the right tool for the job. If you're going for something that doesn't look vector, then you need to consider if it needs to be vector in the first place. I've decided that in this case it far easier to use GIMP to get the look I wanted.

I've always like vector because the nature of the format gave me confidence, but as my eye as developed I've learnt to trust myself more. I'm more sure about my colour choices, and am happy to scrap what I've done and draw it again if I need to when working with a raster application.
