Working on this poetry adaptation....how can I reverse the background to black and text to white to be the stars of the image? (want to keep moon white and "moon" text to be black) Saved in layers and tried: extensions--color negative but could not make it work.
Again, thanks in advance from a technically challenged poet.

Re: Reversing background and text color
Never used that extension.
Just added a path to the background and changed the fills.
And moved everyting to one layer.
In this case it is not necessary to use layers. Actually there are not much cases where they can be really handy.

Your mind is what you think it is.

Hi Kelly;
I took the liberty of messing with your graphic design. Here's what I did to accommodate your basic idea.
Since you're off to a good start with Inkscape, I have a small recommendation for you.
While it is possible to turn your canvas black, that won't put a black background to your graphic work. Always best to use an independent layer. I was tempted but didn't add a gradient to the night sky, say from black at the top to a deep purple at the bottom. But that's possible with a black rectangle as your starting background.
Enjoy!
I took the liberty of messing with your graphic design. Here's what I did to accommodate your basic idea.
- I clicked the layers icon in the icon bar (but you can do that with Ctrl Shift L, or from the menus: Layers > Layers...
- I stretched down the layers box on the right side to see all the layers you created. I was pleasantly surprised that you added them. Kudos on that.
- I then checked the document size (Ctrl Shift D) and saw you were using US Letter, landscape.
- On the first layer called Layer 1 I added a black rectangle and sized it to 11 inches by 8.5 (like druban suggested)
- I centered the black rectangle to the page by way of the Alignment tool in the icon bar.
- In the layers list, I click the small eye icon and made my black rectangle disappear.
- I clicked each layer above that one, highlighted all the items and clicked the white in the color selector at the bottom of the page.
- When selecting the moon, I opted for a pale grey as opposed to a pure white. Feel free to change that.
- When it came to the word MOON I selected a very dark grey. Feel free to change that too.
- Your mountain range at the bottom of the page appeared a bit too... jagged. So I clicked it once then, from the menus, clicked Path > Simplify (or Ctrl L) to give it a gentler curve, leaving your original design there.
Since you're off to a good start with Inkscape, I have a small recommendation for you.
- Start up Inkscape.
- Click the Freehand icon on the left tool bar
- Now, you should see the second row of icons at the top of the program will be different from when Inkscape started. You should see the word "Mode" there. To the right of that is "Smoothing" and a slider. The default setting is "Smoothing: 4". Try adjusting that upward a bit to say, "Smoothing: 40" for a mountain like the one you drew. Just remember to adjust it each time you use this tool.
