I really need help with the inkscape rulers.

Postby iaisu » Tue Feb 16, 2016 7:15 am

Okay, so this is my issue:
I am trying to make a youtube banner for my channel.
I know the dimensions are 2560x1440, however, my ruler for some unknown reason is not showing it completely, and I know why.
My ruler is also showing -1250 to 0. I don't want it to, or else I can't view my image.
I want it to go from 0 to 2560 and that's it.
How do I change my ruler to not view the negative dimensions?
Please help ASAP.
Thank you.
This is the picture, as you can see, it doesn't start at 0, but negative.

I'm not sure if I understand the underlying problem completely, but I think that what you really want to do is change the page size to 2560x1440px.

You can adapt the page size by going to File -> Document Properties and then entering a width and a height in the two central fields.
Set the unit to pixels first, then after that, change the values.

You will not need the rulers to know the limits of the drawing after this, because your page will be the size of the banner you want to create, and the page borders will be visible.

Hi.

You can hide the rulers (Ctrl+R) as an alternative.
I don't get why part of the interface would affect the drawing's size you working on -do you happen to make a screenshot of that size?

If the values go from negative it sounds that your object is positioned off the origo that way.
In the document's properties (Shift+Ctrl+D) you can resize page to content if you will.

Edit: Ha! That screenshot did help clarifying. You can zoom to content -zoom to fit drawing in window, by 4 on the numpad-.
Other than that is a very specific request, can't say there is a setting I know of to pan the page borders to the side of the window as per se.

I have no idea why it's doing this. I did set the image but still showing the ruler, even if I remove the ruler I cannot see the image fully.
I also tried resize page to content, but to no avail. Why is this happening?

Hmm so you are working from scratch. That's better.

In my humble opinion the rulers are not that necessary on the sides for pixel perfect graphics.

If you want to make a banner of that size, you need to set it in the mentioned panel.
If there is no object in the document, you cannot change the view/resize page to content.

Just draw a rectangle of the desired size (F4 tool, type in the values in the top boxes to change size)
then you can resize page to content.

OMG THE ZOOM HELPED. THANK YOU!
I wish to still fix the negative but oh well. Your solution worked 100%.
MUCH LOVE! <3

Additional zoom methods:
the zoom tool is the one with the magnifying glass.
Or you can set a zoom level at the bottom right, or zoom in and out by holding Ctrl and using the mouse wheel.
