Silhouette Cameo question

Postby gainsy » Fri Dec 07, 2012 8:49 am

Hi all
Been directed here by a friend to see if i can get some advice
I have been playing around with Inkscape now for about 6 months now & like it a lot, prefer it over Illustrator, i am just about to buy my first cutter so i can cut vinyl paint masks for my airbrush business, at present a friend cuts my masks for me on his mac but this is not always feasible as he lives a long way away so having my own cutter makes sense
Have a budget of around £280 & have come across the Silhouette Cameo which would appear to do what i want it to do so my question is does any one know if Inkscape will work with this cutter & do i need to do/download anything to make them talk to each other? have never cut anything myself before so i guess this will be a bit of a learning curve for me but im willing to listen & learn to any advice offered, i am running windows 7

Cheers in advance

Hi

This is "second hand" information through Google - I have not got the cutter.
It seems to work fine - have a look at these:

(Please post images of your airbrush results :) )

Hi.
Not having the cutter it's a little difficult to do "remote" faultfinding. ( Got something similar - The Eggbot http://egg-bot.com/ )
The Robo manual instructions says to make sure the drivers are installed before the device is connected to the computer.
I have been in the same situation - after all - being a man - reading manuals is something you do when everything else fails!
To get back to "square 1" remove all drivers (rightclick on the driver - choose uninstall) for the Robo and reinstall the drivers before connecting again.
Have a look at this page for furter instructions: http://www.coastalbusiness.com/troubles ... uette.aspx

By the way - very nice designs and paintwork!!

Good Luck.

I don't have a Silhouette either, but you should post your question on the Inkscape Cutting Design forum. It is for people using Inkscape with cutters and there are Silhouette users there that might be able to help you. http://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/index.php

Hi!
I have a silhouette cameo. The cutter has his software "silhouette studio", and basic edition doesn't support SVG files. But, you can import SVG files if you buy the "Designer Edition" of the "silhouette studio". I didn't buy this edition yet, and don't know how it works. If you will get it, please relate about this. At the moment I transfer my SVG files to "silhouette studio" by exporting in PNG, and then opent this PNG in "silhouette studio" ant trace his lines. Studio has a function, named "trace bitmap".

You can also save the files as DXF in Inkscape and then open them in the standard version of Studio. Make sure that your preferences are set to "Make lines into polylines" for DXF import. DXF are rather heavy on nodes, but Studio's simplification looks to work very well for most files.

You have three options for programs that will let you cut svg files with the Cameo. 1. SS Designer Edition, 2. Sure Cuts a Lot 3, and 3. Make the Cut. Both SCAL and MTC have trial versions. If you are thinking about purchasing one of these programs, I would suggest trying them to see which one best fits your needs and preferences. I don't believe that there is a trial for SS Designer Edition.
