Is it possible to combine two paths of differing stroke widths without them being equalised?
I have a leaf shape. I want the outline to be 3px and the vein detail to be 1px. I'd like to combine the paths so it's easier to apply the Bend Path Effect, without having to bend each part separately.
Thanks

No, you can't do that. When two paths are combined, they become one path - and a path has only one stroke-width.

In recent development versions of Inkscape, the solution would be to group the paths, and then apply the path effect to the group. But this doesn't work in Inkscape 0.46.
Re: Combine paths, maintain stroke width
I'm thinking you could have the edge of the leaf and the veins on 2 different layers. Then at least you'd only have to bend twice....per leaf, I guess. Although you may find it a more natural appearance for the veins to have slightly different curves, or the curves slightly askew. (On this part, I'm more of an expert, on leaves, plants in general....as opposed to Inkscape ) Although I guess it depends on the type of leaf, how closely you want your leaves to look to the real thing, the size, relative to the rest of your piece, lighting, etc.
Anyway, that's what I can contribute
Good luck!

Re: Combine paths, maintain stroke width
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something but that makes sense.
I've been able to combine the paths on the veins and another path for the outline so at least there's just two sets of path bending. It does look more natural that way and I've been able to vary the leaves in more ways than I had anticipated
Thanks for your replies and suggestions.
