Super new to Inkscape.
I created a drawing, grouping various objects as I went along. When I was happy with it, I grouped all the groups together as one object. I increased the size of the page to 2800 x 1900 px, and then selected the object, and then increased the object using one of the arrows. I held down cntrl as I sized it up, no worries.
But now if I ungroup everything, the bezier curves I drew all shrink back to their original size, yet other objects remain the same. What am I doing wrong?
Cheers.
Objects return to size when I ungroup
Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup

Welcome to InkscapeForum!
I can't quite imagine what might be happening. Could you show us the SVG file, and also tell us what we need to do to reproduce the problem? It sounds like we should just Ungroup, to see the objects shrink? (You could either attach the SVG to your next reply, or upload wherever you choose, then give us the link.)

Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup
Hope the link works. Its a bacteria, and the little hair like structures and the flagella (tails) all revert back to their origal thickness when they are ungrouped.

Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup
Your image isn't showing up. At least not for me. But rather than see the image, we need to have access to the SVG file, so we can download it and open in Inkscape, and investigate. If you use Post Reply (not Quick Reply) look below the Submit button for Upload Attachments tab. Or I have picked up SVG images from dropbox in the past, by saving and opening with inkscape. So maybe there's a problem with the link to dropbox. When I go to it, it shows me a chain and padlock and tells me I can't be there! It says Error (403). I'm not familiar with dropbox, but maybe there's a choice to make your images public, or something like that??

Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup
Thanks for your ongoing help and patience. Sorry about the file not being visible etc.
I just tried to attach it, but the file was too big.
So I have made another file to show what I mean, and have attached it.
I made the 2 swirls and then adjusted their widths (via the path editor) to 2.000
I then drew a blue square.
Then I selected all 3 objects and grouped them.
Then I scaled that group up.
But the problem is that when if I ungroup that group, the swirls change back to having their width of 2.000, which is not what I want to happen. The square stays the same, so what's going on with those bezier spiro swirls?
Thanks,
Jen

Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup
Hi Jen,
Ahh, I see. It's not anything you're doing wrong. The problem is that the swirls are not bezier curves. Instead, they are something called spiro splines. I can't explain why this happens, because I don't know why. And actually, I suppose it could be a bug. But if it is, I'll have to leave it to others who understand the technical side of Inkscape, to make a report. It seems a little odd to me, but spiro splines have an odd sort of behavior anyway (to me, it seems odd).
Anyway, no worries. I've found a relatively simple solution. If you use Ctrl + click, you can select a single object in a group, without needing to Ungroup. And Ctrl + Alt + click will select objects (in groups) that are below other objects in the z-order. So I found that if I select the spiro splines without ungrouping, then do Path menu > Object to Path, they become fixed at that size. Once they are converted to paths, they don't shrink when I ungroup.
But there is one warning about this. Once the spiro splines are converted to regular paths, they no longer behave like splines. So you need to be absolutely sure they are in the position you want, before doing that. Because once they are converted to paths, they can't be made back into splines. ....hhmmm.... Well, they sort of can, but not in a very effective way. Anyway, if you think there's any chance you might want to edit the splines again, you could save duplicates on a hidden layer, to make it easier than drawing all over again.
If there are a really lot of these splines in the image, it might make more sense to convert to paths as you go. Like just before you're ready to group, do Object to Path. But it sounds like it might be too late for that now
There is another solution to this, and that is to draw them at the proper size in the first place, rather than use scaling to get the proper size. Then you would not need to convert to regular paths. It sounds like that might not suit your workflow, but I just wanted to mention it.
I hope this will work for you. But if not, please explain, and I (or someone) can try again

Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup
Thanks so much for your help. I tried your suggestion and it works beautifully.
I'm learning to use Inkscape with a view to producing vector graphics to sell on Etsy and through microstock companies. So there might be some issue with the spiros not being editable as spiros for a buyer. But at least they will be the right size if they ungroup!
Cheers,
Jen

Re: Objects return to size when I ungroup
Just a hint on the spiro lines. If you decide to use them again in future projects, I've found that by adding several extra nodes into the path, that it doesn't 'go squiggly' so much. To do that just go into the node mode, click on select all (nodes), then click on add nodes, might have to click on add nodes a couple of times to get enough so that they don't seem to have a life of it's own.
I also suggest to add an extra layer that you keep with a duplicate of all of the spiros, that way if they go wonkos you can always go back to the copy.

Thanks flamingo, great tip. So glad there are so many helpful people on the net who are ready to lend a hand to a newbie.
