pattern handles missing?

Postby brynn » Mon Oct 31, 2011 12:21 am

Hi Friends,
Can anyone find the pattern handles for the rectangle's pattern fill, in the attached SVG?

This is too spooky for a Halloween drawing, lol. Also attached is a PNG of what I see, which is NO handles, in case anyone can find them in the SVG. I have it scrolled all the way up and to the left, which is usually the region where I find the handles. And you can see that the Node tool is engaged. (Yes, I've switched to Selection tool and back to Node tool at least 10 times by now.) What the heck?! (~suv's gonna have a fit if this is a bug that was fixed in 0.48.2, since I've procrastinated about installing it yet.)

Really, is it just something about this pattern, this rectangle/path? I can make other objects and fill with other patterns. I can make other objects and fill with this pattern. And the handles pop right up at the top left corner of the page. But not for this one!

I might mention that this is not the first time that pattern handles have failed to appear. But all the other times....frankly, I just didn't want to bother posting a message, and just found another way to achieve my goals. I've been fairly thorough in researching and troubleshooting today though, and I just can't find what's wrong :(

Maybe it's just the first pattern made doesn't have handles, but all subsequently used or made patterns do get handles?? I'll close down Inkscape after I post this, and try that theory.

Thanks for your help :D

Ah-HA!

So I found them! They were considerably outside the scrollable canvas. With the vertical scrollbar as far up as it would go, I drew a selection box extending off the top of the scrollable canvas. This forces Inkscape to create more blank canvas. So there, I would estimate 6 or 7 times the height of my business card page size ABOVE :o the edge of the scrollable canvas, I found the handles! (nearly 10 times the page height from the top of the page)

I don't understand how Inkscape can even draw beyond the scrollable canvas. Which it seems to me, the scrollable canvas should be all the canvas there is, and Inkscape was putting the handles outside of reality  I also don't understand why all the other objects I drew, to fill with a pattern, to troubleshoot this, ALL the other handles were placed, not only inside the scrollable canvas, but most of the time, right on the top left corner of the business card page corner. Why were the handles for this rectangle placed so far away? Is it because the default page size was A4? I changed it to business card before I started drawing though, so neither the rectangle or the pattern ever thought it was on an A4 page -- certainly not any more so than any of the other 6 or 8 pattern filled objects I made for testing :?

Ok, so problem solved, and I can get back to work Image. Although if there is no bug report on this, I would be glad to make one. I suspect there already is one though.

Well thanks again for your help. Even though I did solve the problem, I wouldn't mind hearing any explanations about this vexing (spooky :P ) issue :D
