For measuring areas there is the function: Extensions | Visualize Path | Measure Path...

It works fine for arbitrary paths.
However, it doesn't work for objects like rectangles circles...

OK, so I have to change those objects to paths:
Object | Object to Path
Now, it works for the rectangle but still not for the circle.
However, if I distort the circle to an ellipse it works for the ellipse.

Why does it not work for a circle?

That extension works fine for me on a circle. After you apply the extension, look around on the canvas. Sometimes the measurement appears some distance away. For many extensions, the result is sometime rendered somewhere on the canvas, but off the screen, and I have to look around (scroll) to find them.
