Hi Community

I'm new in Inkscape. I am using a tablet for drawing and writing in Inkscape. I just need a few simple features. I was wondering if it's possible to change the color of the pen via a shortcut? because with the tablet ist cool to just klick at a button and then the color changes. I couldnt find anything like that in the "help" of Inkshape so i decided to ask some more skilled guys like you^^
And do you guys know if it's possible to open a new page in "no_border" mode? It always opens in A4 mode when i start Inkscape and then i have to change it with opening a new page in "no_border" mode. Thats kind of annoying^^

In this case, by "pen", you mean Inkscape's Pen tool , rather than the tablet's actual pen, right? Since the pen tool draws a stroked path, what you need to do is change the color of the stroke. You can do it with the Fill and Stroke dialog, but that takes a few clicks. But with the stroke whose color that you want to change, selected, Shift + click the color in the palette along the bottom of the window, works too. (A single click alone on the palette changes the fill.) I tend not to use keyboard shortcuts as much as others, so there may well be another even shorter-cut. And I'm sure someone else will reply with that info, if so

I don't know what you mean by "no_border" mode. You can remove the border using the Document Properties dialog (bottom of the Page tab). Or you can create your own default doc that suits your preferences, so that every new doc opens with the things you want and without those you don't want (including border or no border). Before I launch into instructions though, I want to be sure what you mean by "opening a new page in "no_border" mode".

By "Pen" I mean any drawing tool in Inkscape. I am drawing with the Marker tool, because it's the best way for me to write with Inkscape. Sorry for my bad expression^^.

The "no_border" mode is a pre-set profil of a new page. When I open Inkscape it always opens in a small format page. So there is a pre-set page called "no_border". The page is then endless in any direction so you can just scroll around without hitting to an end. I tried to design my own page and make Inkscape load that page with every start but I couldn't figure out how.

Oh ok, I can tell you how.

First open Inkscape and set up a document as you want it to be, every time you open Inkscape. Save As "default.svg" (without quotes), and save in C:\....\Inkscape\share\templates. Since there already exists a file by that name, you'll probably get some kind of dialog asking if you want to replace or overwrite that file, and just say yes or ok, or whatever. And actually, you can create any kind of document you want, and give it your own name.

However, I have not been able to figure out how to get other documents besides "default.svg" to appear in Inkscape > Document Properties > Page tab > Page size list of documents templates. I see many different document templates in C:\....\Inkscape\share\templates, which don't appear in Doc Props. If anyone knows how to make those appear there, it might help Jan, and it will definitely help me!

(Shared and user) templates are not related to the file formats listed in 'Document Properties' (those are built-in, based on common paper formats) - templates are listed in 'File > New…'

I would not recommend to overwrite the shared default template (at least not without making a backup copy to be able to restore the default without having to reinstall the whole application).
Even better would be to install custom user templates in the Inkscape user profile (%APPDATA%\Inkscape\templates) [1] - any template called 'default.svg' will override the shared default template and be used for new documents (opened by clicking on the 'New' icon in the commands bar). Other custom templates will be added to the 'Files > New…' list after relaunching Inkscape and can be chosen as template for a new file from that menu.

[1] you can enter the string "%APPDATA%" directly into the address bar of the Explorer for easier access.

File > New -- Oooooohhhh!! There they are! I don't know why, but I never noticed that before Or more precisely, never looked closely, and thought they were the same as in Doc Props.

Thanks ~suv. I guess I didn't clearly understand the difference between saving the new default.svg in C:\...\Inkscape\share\templates, and C:\User\AppData\Roaming\Inkscape\templates (on Windows 7), except that you say the latter is preferred. Well, I do know that one is the Program Files and the other are user preferences, backups, games scores, etc. But why this matters for Inkscape is what I wasn't clear about.

Because when I navigate there, I find the User\...\templates folder is empty. So if I were to put a default.svg in there, it would be there alone. Is that how it's supposed to be? When I was learning how to make the personal default (thanks to your instructions in the topic you linked to, ~suv) I didn't understand why the folder was empty, and decided to put it in the program directory (and also because I understood it better).
