Open Clip Art for competition entries

Postby microUgly » Wed Jul 18, 2007 8:39 am

What do you guys think of making it a rule that competition entries need to have their SVG files on Open Clip Art? This would mean that you also need to conform to their File Guidelines which I think is fair.

great idea! they can be linked, and you can upload your PNG and your SVG to the same Upload. If we do do this, just remember that everything you upload to Open Clip Art you have to release it into the public domain...

That would be cool... I'll read through the guidelines and create an account. I didn't know they were back up!

I'm not sure I'd make it a rule, but I'd definitely encourage it.
Public Domain is a bit of an extreme thing to impose for a competition, at least when we're still pretty small.

Would it not be more beneficial to start now while the forum is small? That way while it grows it becomes a competition standard rather than trying to introduce and encourage it later in the game. I see this as a win-win in that the forum can contribute to the library and the library gains some new talent. In the end users of both the OCAL and the Forum will benefit.

I had a reservation at first as well. However I thought it through. I am not currently doing any vector work directly for pay and the work of the competitions I choose to enter will help someone else... how cool is that?

I was not sure at first, but now i think it's just a good idea. My reservation was for some drawing beeing appropriate for a contest but not realy for the OCAL (perhaps because they cannot be usefull as a clipart or they are specificly related to the forum).
Finally i don't think they will be a lot of drawings in this case and i would say like Darth_Gimp : let us do it from the beginning !

That's a good point. Most of my own work doesn't qualify as "clip art".

How do people feel about specifying that the competition is a "clip art" competition? Maybe when this forum becomes more popular we can create a seperate competition for drawings, or complete work.

basically, the name of openclipart is a bit decieving... as long as the artwork is all vector, and public domain, we would love to have it in the collection, it does not neccecarily need to be "Clip art" in the tradtional sense of the word(s)

:P

even if an upload is not super useful by itself, you can be sure that someone will take part of your image and remix it, making it more useful... remixing is one of the best parts of OCAL!

Keep in mind that the use of clipart has changed as well. Clipart is not just for printed newsletters any more. "clipart" can be used on websites and forums. With that in mind there is little that would not qualify as Clipart.

Hmm... so, this rule is final?

In case you are still waiting for votes, I completely agree with this rule. :)

Nice idea, sorry for joining you guys late.

I have been submitting few themed clip art at openclipart library like sports, real estate, halloween , fall etc. It would be great to arrange for competition entries. Competitions and user submitted packages would be a nice way to add some team spirit.
