Can't change stroke color

Postby asmith7501 » Sat Dec 27, 2014 12:29 pm

I'm pretty new to Inkscape and have been using it for maybe a couple of months off and on. It was working fine at first. Then yesterday, I noticed I couldn't change the stroke color. It stays black no matter what. And when I have it selected and try to change it, the fill color changes instead of the stroke color. Does anyone have any idea of what might be the problem? Is it a glitch, or did I change a setting and not realize it?

Any chance it is a clone?

I'd select the object and check the status bar notification area.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Have you tried to use both the color dialogue box and to drag the color directly into the stroke color bar in the bottom of the screen?

Did you by accident use "Stroke to path"?

I don't know what I did, as I said, I'm very new at using Inkscape. All I know is, when I try to change the stroke color, it either does nothing, or it changes the fill to that color. Extremely confusing and frustrating.

Feel free to upload an example file for inspection.

Now the opposite is happening, I'm able to get the stroke to work, but not the fill. When you say to upload a file, do you mean of the entire screen? How do I do that? Sorry, I'm really new at this.

Also, sometimes when I have the stroke tab selected and then click on a color, it applies that color to the fill and not the stroke.

You can save the page as an SVG file and attach it to a reply:

Ok, I tried doing a screen shot and uploading it. If you can see it, I have the Stroke tab selected, but the fill is the color I selected for the stroke.

Well the screenshot doesn't reveal much.

It sounds like you have a handle on the proper behavior of the stroke & fill tools, so we needn't belabor the obvious.

It might help to reset the preferences to default values, in case they are somehow corrupted. The easiest way is to close Inkscape and rename the preferences.xml file.

I'd try renaming the preferences.xml file to preferences_old.xml, and see if the automatic replacement file works better, when Inkscape is relaunched.

The file is located in Windows at %userprofile%\Application Data\Inkscape\. ( I Imagine in this case: C:\Users\Sweetheart\Application Data\Inkscape\)

What we see in the screenshot, is that you have set the stroke to be black and the fill to be red. And the circle shows exactly that.

Do you mean that you want the stroke to be red and the fill to be black?

One thing that newbies often don't realize, especially if they have some experience with raster graphics, is that with Inkscape, you have to select the object first (or draw it), and then change the color. In raster programs you change the color first, and then select the object (or draw it).
