Help with conversion to .ai files?

Postby TheUnnamedDisease » Sat Apr 03, 2010 1:29 am

This is a bit convoluted, so bare with me. I am taking a graphics class currently and we are expected to make two designs by Monday. But the teacher gives us only a little over and hour to work. So I decided to try to work on my project over break. This class uses Adobe Illustrator CS4 (school). I used Inkscape for the design on a separate computer (home). Now I need to send the .svg file (on home computer) over to Illustrator/.ai file (on school computer) and still retain the vectorization. I've been searching for a way to do this to no avail. Is this possible to do? If so, how?

Thanks in advance...sorry, I'm not very tech-savvy.

Adobe Illustrator should open SVG right? Save the file as Plain SVG in Inkscape (not Inkscape SVG), then open it in Adobe Illustrator and save as ai. Let us know how it goes.

Does it matter that I don't have AI on the computer with the Inkscape design on it?

No it doesn't matter, you just have to transfer the plain SVG to the computer with Illustrator and open it with it. Then within Illustrator you can save it as ai.

Thanks a lot! It worked like a charm. I just loaded up the plain svg onto my flash drive and took it to school.
