Need help with Drop Box

Postby flamingolady » Thu Jun 13, 2013 6:24 am

hi
My e-mail acct won't let me send large files, so I need another option. So, I decided to get a Drop Box.com acct because I have some files that I want to share, but, I can't figure out how to use it to share a few folders. help help! I was able to create a folder in Drop box for that person, but stumped on how to give them access to it.
Anyone knowledgeable?
thanks
dee

Didn't try it myself yet, but
if you right click on a folder, you can select "invite to folder",
where you can set that available for your contact.
Some info on that is here:
https://www.dropbox.com/help/19/en
If you want to share only some files, it may be easier to just use the share link of the file -with the www part replaced by dl.

Might be unnecessary to mention, but that other person has to have Dbox acct, too. Otherwise, only links to the files in your folder would be available for the Other person.

`My Favourites` could be among protected (system) folders and it also might be a problem for sharing it. Windows has it`s own rules for sharing folders and only after those Dbox might come in a line, depending of your Win settings. Warm recommendation for a Dbox desktop app if you plan to keep that sharing alive. If not, it might be a burden for a sys resources and occasional updating does the trick.

Easiest solution could be manual updating of the dedicated folder (copy/paste from MyFavourites folder to the OtherPerson folder on your pc).
:tool_zoom: <<< click! - but, those with a cheaper tickets should go this way >>> :!:

thx Lazur, I think I was able to do the contact thing. Not entirely sure I understand what link to replace the 'dl' on, but assume it's to the folder I created for that person. Will try that idea out first.
Just to note: that person is not on my network/computer, it's for a friend's pc.
thx to both for the replies, this gives me a direction to go in.

Thx for that very detailed info Pilosopong Tasyo! Not sure I saw a public folder, so that could be where I went astray!

Dropbox from a bit now doesn't create a public folder.
Also, you don't have to be sync with your online account.
You can use it on all computers connected to the net, it doesn't require that you installed dropbox on your computer.
Thought the bookmarks description meant some links to pages, not the folder.

So if you go to dropbox.com and sign in, you can create and name folders, and upload files as you like.
Then the process goes as described before.
For an example, with no folders shared, I can share files as
clicking on the file at it's folder with the right mouse button
then select the share link option,
and use the get link button.
Then dropbox copies the link to the clipboard

Code: Select all

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hbt1b7562vb5n36/thom1.svg

where the www part needs to be changed to dl, to make it public:

Code: Select all

https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hbt1b7562vb5n36/thom1.svg

Which then you can use it here, alone with url tags or with img or svg tags, or with the combination of those.

Like this:

Code: Select all

[url]https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hbt1b7562vb5n36/thom1.svg[/url]

Code: Select all

[svg]https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hbt1b7562vb5n36/thom1.svg[/svg]

Code: Select all

[url=https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hbt1b7562vb5n36/thom1.svg][svg]https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hbt1b7562vb5n36/thom1.svg[/svg][/url]

ok, I'm not good with the whole quote thing, so please forgive me in advance. This may be a language thing or a techie thing, am guessing what Lazur means in 'Dropbox from a bit...' - I assume 'BIT' means by default that it doesn't create a public folder.
I was able to create a folder (named it with the person's name), and I think I was able to right click and made it public, being done at 2:00 a.m. I now forget the exact steps. Am getting there. I keep losing internet connection, plus tornado warnings and storms coming through, so may have to pick this up tonight or tomorrow. I also need to see if the person is willing to get dropbox as well. At any rate I needed to learn how to use it. You'll have the best info, so thanks much! It may take a few days, or longer, but I'll report back!

https://www.dropbox.com/help/16/en
Please note: New Dropbox accounts created after October 4, 2012 no longer have a Public folder.
...
all the extra functionality provided by the Public folder is now accessible anywhere in your Dropbox.

Didn't remember the exact date.

...You can also send the links to anyone...

-meaning, you can share the files with anyone who doesn't have a dropbox account.

It worked, yay. Thanks to you both for such good explanations! Now that I understand that there are 2 ways of sharing, it all fell into place so much easier!
Somehow I missed the step to right click and select the copy link, so the screen print hit the nail on the head (Pilosopong Tasyo). Didn't realize that it literally copied a link into memory and all I needed to do was to paste it. yay, it works, at least on my end.

ok, I still don't understand the whole UI thing, but that's ok, and now am wondering how to turn Dropbox off until I need it again? I'm a little concerned about having a public folder out there, and was actually thinking that I'd uninstall DropBox, after this, but if there's a way to shut if off, that's the way to go I think...

Thank you both! I think my brain increased, got another notch in it, loll.

I think there is some link in that folder to give access to anyone with link or just anyone with email.
