How to type Degree Sign or alternative letter/signs?
OK, on my Mac the 'Sht/Ctrl 8' produces the Degree sign, and I just found out it opens the history side bar in opera. BHAAAA. Any way this is what I get using the numbers with Shift/Ctrl ` ⁄ € ‹ › fi fl ‡ ° · ‚ ” ’. I obviously can not do that with Inscape shortcuts. How do I get these alternative lettering/signs and Degree sign into svg using inkscape? Copy and paste does not work from mac window to X11 window.

Opps, the above was done in Dorvak layout, with the English layout on a mac it is opt/shift and I get ` ⁄ € ‹ › fi fl ‡ ° · ‚ — ± with the numbers keys. Not do totally confuse anyone. Anyways it still does not type in Inscape.

OK, this is what I figured out so far, but not the ideal solution. I can copy and paste from Open Office but no matter what keyboard layout I use, in OO I have to use the opt/shift keys. I also have NeoOffice because it looks and preforms better then OO on a mac, but I can not cut and paste from NeoOffice to Inkscape, bummer. If Inkscape looks great on a mac with X11 why does OO looks suck?

You would be forgiven for not finding how to do this. From http://www.inkscape.org/doc/tips/tutorial-tips.html
Note that on Windows I found you have to use the numbers above the character keys on your keyboard--the numberpad keys didn't type in this mode.
Entering Unicode values
While in the Text tool, pressing Ctrl+U toggles between Unicode and normal mode. In Unicode mode, each group of 4 hexadecimal digits you type becomes a single Unicode character, thus allowing you to enter arbitrary symbols (as long as you know their Unicode codepoints and the font supports them). To finish the Unicode input, press Enter. For example, Ctrl+U 2 0 1 4 Enter inserts an em-dash (—). To quit the Unicode mode without inserting anything press Esc.

Which OS X version, which X11/Xquartz version, which Inkscape version (and - but if it sucks I care less - which OOo version)? Do you use any xmodmap settings to change the keymap under X11? Did you check the X11 input preferences? [hint: under Leopard most issues are with how the 'Option' key is recognized by X11 and Inkscape, be it as 'Alt_L' (needed for UI shortcuts) or 'Mode_switch' (needed for text input of diacritical marks or special characters)]

On my version of Inkscape (0.91 r13725 running on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS), I found that there is a Glyphs dialog that is handy to find these types of symbols when you do not know the Unicode symbol. Below graphic shows how to use that dialog which I found rather involved (not bad, just involved):

I'm using a Mac running OSX Yosemite (10.10.5), XQuartz 2.7.11, and Inkscape 0.91.
To go into the Unicode-entry mode, I find I have to use the key combination Ctrl-Shift-U. (Ctrl-U does not work for this.)
