I have a complex shape of many rectangles.

When I cut some of the rectangles my rectangle corner goes from a hard corner to a spline. Is it [possible to tell inkscape the resulting path will be a corner or can I pick a vertex and change the type of a corner from a spline?

If it goes from rectangle to part spline, when you cut or delete or move or do anything at all, that means you probably drew it with the Pen or Pencil in spiro spline mode. You can quickly get it back to a normal path by selecting it, then Path menu > Remove Path Effect.

I know it's really frustrating switching modes with those 2 tools. I am forever forgetting to switch back! And judging by the number of messages we get about it, a lot of people also forget, lol

Ummm.....that's all assuming it's actually going to a spline, and not just a bezier curve. I think Ragnar's comments probably refer to Bezier curve.

You can set at the node editor's preferencies that if you delete a node from a path, should it turn the remaining segment to curved or linear.
To do that, double click on the tool's icon, and untick the bottom line.
