[SOLVED] Image saving as plain colour background

Postby Bcraniehiggs » Wed Mar 11, 2015 4:53 am

So today I made a thumbnail for a video on my YT channel. The image was just a basic black background with some patterned text on it. The problem is, when I save the image as a png, all I see when I open it using, for example, windows photo viewer, is a black background. The colour is just the colour I chose as a background during the creation of the image in Inkscape.

The weird thing is that this only happens when I use patterned text.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hello,

- Which version of Inkscape are you using?

- I'll see if I can reproduce your problem here, but I'm not sure to understand how exactly you have a text pattern in a black background, so could you post your problematic svg file, or a similar sample, here in the forum? You can attach a file, or a zip file if it's too big, or put a link to a cloud-storage site.

- Or if you have solved your prolbem post here your solution
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

Thank you for your quick reply. Currently I cannot access my computer because I am going to sleep shortly but I can try and explain my image a bit better in the meantime.

It was a plain black background, with 6 words of text on it. I imported some images. Then set them as the pattern. After doing that, I chose the style of the filling of the letters to be pattern, so that they would take those images as their "filling".

Hello,
In my opinion, better send the problematic SVG, because in your method, there are many steps that could produce, or not, an error. Or at the end, it could even be a bug on Inkscape.
A guessing list:
- Your imported images are linked, not embedded
- Your imported images are embedded, not linked
- Your font it's not well tested. Or try to convert it to paths
- A problem with the opaccity
- You ae exporting (to png) in a bad way your image
- A problem with the scale
- You are not telling us something important or you are missing it.
- You are not saved well your work. The pictures that you use in your pattern are missing
- Your font is not present.

I've tried to use a image as a pattern into a text. As a background I used a rect filled with a gray color with the size of the page. The exported to png the page. I don't see any problem...

Perhaps another user have a better idea

If you're concern is how the image looks in Windows Photo Viewer, we probably can't be much help. Have you tried to look at the image with any other kind of viewer? For example, how does it look in Windows Explorer thumbnails? Or try uploading to an image host, a view in a browser. This will help us determine whether the problem is with Inkscape, or the viewer.

Edit
And if you can share the SVG file with the problematic image, that would be great! Then we can test ourselves. Did you say which version of Inkscape you're using? If not, please tell us :D

Alright. So I think I am using version 0.48 of Inkscape. Here are the .png and the .svg files:

Patterned Text Error.rar
(254.39 KiB) Downloaded 184 times

(The .svg file was too big so I had to compress them with winrar)

Hello,

I see that some issues, that i was suspecting were giving problems in your design ... seem to be true

- You are using a font called "aldo the apache",... which i don't have... Talk about non standard fonts, SVG, Inkscape, coul make a veeeery long story. Quick workaround: convert your text to paths using CTRL+SHIFT+C.

- You have embedded your pics in the svg... That's why your SVG file is big... on the other hand, you can share with any other user, without to worry in giving the image files...

What I think it's giving you problems:
At the moment of exporting (using Shift + Ctrl + E), you have selected only the black background rectangle. To avoid that problem, it's better to select the "page" as exporting area, ... and change also the name of the exporting file (*). Try it, hope that will solve the problem.

Have you consulted "The Guide" the Inkscape Guide?... If no, YOU MUST consult it.

(*) The information of the exporting png area, somehow it's saved into the SVG file of Inkscape, as XML code. In drawings where there are lots of objects to be exported separatelly, that thing generated problems (using 0.48 version of INkscape). In Inkscape 0.91, I haven't tried that feature.

Greetings

Make sure to use 'File > Export Bitmap' (0.48) instead of saving a copy as 'Cairo PNG'.

As mentioned in the manual, the file format 'Cairo PNG' was mainly used as test format, and has known limitations (among them poor support for pattern fills).

Thank you. Exporting rather than saving as png worked.
