Using Inkscape for Game tiles?

Postby Vercingetorix » Sun Dec 06, 2009 11:37 pm

Hi, I'm new here
I really enjoy the flexibility of vector illustration programs like inkscape and if it's at all feasible i would like use Inkscape to create the artwork for a game i'm making - before scaling the pictures down and importing them into a program called Multimedia Fusion 2.

However i'm unsure how to approach creating tileable graphics using Inkscape, i know in Photoshop there is a method which uses the Offset filter to help in creating seamless tiles but when it comes to creating tileable vector graphics i'm not sure where to start so i'd really appreciate any assistance anyone has to offer in regards to creating seamless repeating tiles in Inkscape - I suppose an example of what i mean might be if say i wanted to create a cobblestone floor the most efficient way to do this would be to repeat a pattern across the floor and have it do this seamlessly - so what methods would i use to acheive this using inkscape?

Also If anyone else has gone down a similar path before (using Inkscape for game graphics) and can offer any additional advice that would also be very helpfull
Thanks

Gimp would be the software most comparable with photoshop. It provides an offset command.

If you are creating items yourself, then using clones in an grid array would let you see how the seamlesss tile would work, then export the same sized rectangle.

I'm sure this can be done with Inkscape, although it will be done differently than if you use raster graphics like GIMP. Here's a tutorial that covers the most basic concepts. Maybe you can get a better idea whether you want to use Inkscape or not. But again, remember that vector graphics is different than raster graphics.
