Reset default filter settings?
I'm just now starting to play with filters & got myself in a bind.
After playing with the parameters for Pixel Smear on a solid black path & successfully exporting the .png image afterwards, the path turned white while I had another window open. If I remove the filter effect, the path returns to black, but if I add Pixel Smear again, it goes right back to white. In fact, it may even be transparent b/c when I put a dark rectangle behind the path to find it (& lowered the rectangle to the bottom of that layer), the path was still not visible, although I was able to click on it. Is there a way to reset the default settings for that filter? I haven't had any luck in the manuals, blogs, or forums so far. Thanks!!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!
Once you close Inkscape and reopen, the original Pixel Smear filter should be restored. Or if you apply the same filter to a different object, using the Filter menu, rather than the Filters Editor, it should apply the original. But note that when I apply that filter to several identical objects, it looks a little different every time.
Could you have changed the Type (in Effect Parameters) from Fractal Noise to Turbulence? When I do that, the whole object seems to disappear (as your line seems to have disappeared).

Re: Reset default filter settings?
Thanks for getting back on this! I tried restarting my .svg document, Inkscape & my computer. I tried applying Pixel Smear to other objects through the filter menu, but it made them all disappear. I also made sure the Type was set to Fractal Noise (which it was already).
I tried exporting a design with the invisible Pixel Smear added & was able to view it just fine in other programs. However, it's a little crazy to have to export every item just to preview it since I can't see it in Inkscape. Do you think this is a glitch, or am I still doing something wrong? If it matters, I'm using version 0.48.2 on a Mac. Maybe you (or someone) can give me the default settings for Pixel Smear...Do you think that might work? Thanks again!

Re: Reset default filter settings?
If you can post an SVG file with the faulty filter, we can look at it, and compare our defaults. I'm not qualified to identify bugs, but others can. Unfortunately Pixel Smear is a fairly complex filter, with 9 primitives, all with unique settings. It would take a lot of time to write out all the settings, or even to make so many screenshots.
I don't understand why applying the filter from the menu didn't use the defaults. You tried it in a new blank document, and not one where you adjusted it the first time? Or possibly this is related to the Mac. There are some quirks using Inkscape on a Mac. I'm not aware of filter issues, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

Re: Reset default filter settings?
After you said that about using the Mac, I remembered problems I've had w/some other programs on Mac, which suggest restarting 8 times (not sure why that's a magic number). When I did that & started a new .svg document, the Pixel Smear worked fine. I even tried different things to make it not work, although I did not try adjusting the settings. So I guess it was just that one document with the problem for some reason. If I import that bad .svg file into another new one, the Pixel Smear still doesn't work correctly, but I was able to recreate the paths & apply Pixel Smear with no problem. Thanks for your help!
Re: Reset default filter settings?
Wow! I'm not familiar with Macs at all, and never heard about restarting 8 times. So I can't really comment or explain. But I'm glad you fixed it
