How to select a card from this svg image?

Postby Mauricederegt » Tue May 13, 2014 12:12 am

Hi there,

I am quite new to Inkscape, so bare with me.

I have a svg image and in that image are some playing cards: http://mauricederegt.nl/carddeck.svg. Now I want select each card and copy it in it's own page. Normaly I use the selector tool :tool_selector: and select the image I want to copy and paste it in a new page. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work in this file. I can't seem to select a single card (only all at once).

How can I select just 1 card to copy it or put all cards individually into a page? (or perhaps easier to do: delete all cards except 1)

Kind regards,
Maurice

Hi.

If you click on one "card image" and observe the status line at the bottom of the Inkscape window you will see 'Group of 8 objects in root'

First you have to ungroup by SHIFT + CTRL +G (twice)
(This operation crashes on the newest development version of Inkscape but works on the 'official' 0.48.4)

You can then select the individual cards.

Hi Maurice,

Welcome aboard!

At the bottom indicator bar it says the object containing the cards is a group of 8 objects.
Once ungrouped (Shift+Ctrl+G), the cards will be inside smaller group of objects.

Exactly as Ragnar wrote above.

By ungrouping them you can reach each card, however ungrouping all objects until no groups remain would release clippings as well, used on the figures.

There are many raster elements used and inaccurate details, would need some time to clean up the file.
Other than that, it looks quite nice!

Thanks guys that did the trick. It really takes some time indeed. I also see the cards aren't that sharp when making them bigger. Is this due to bad design? Or can I make them sharper?

Hi.

The lack of 'sharpness' is due to the fact that the card consist of a lot of images which does not scale.
To make them sharp convert the images to svg objects.

As there are a lot of common images this might be fairly quick.
Another option is to get 'ready-made' svg cards ; http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... _cards.svg
Do a google search on 'playing card svg' - you will get tons of hits.

Simply converting with the auto-trace won't make a good looking image in any bit.
It definitely needs manual work.
A few days I suppose. The result may benefit the efforts.

Is that original file public domain, or is it for commercial purposes?

It's public as long as the creators name or site is mentioned (which is not me)
