Non-Inkscape SVG - Layers became Groups

Postby Vectorian » Mon Jul 30, 2012 1:55 am

Hi,

first of all, sorry if this question sound's stupid but i don't get it.
Until now I worked on two devices, my Computer and Inkscape for Large files and on the go with my ipad1 and Inkpad for smaler pieces ( because of the export limitations ). Now I have the problem, many of those inkpad Artworks have to be printed. Because Inkpad isn't capable of export such huge raster grafiks or transparency in pdf files, I have to use Inkscape as a step between.
I've placed all objects with blendmodes in seperat layers, so it will fit Inkscapes system how blendmodes are applied. I Even deleted all overlay and color blend modes.
Unfortunately the biggest problem is... my layers get lost.
Well, not really lost, they where converted to groups with the layer names as ID's.
And as you can imagine, because many of them got a blend mode, it looks kinda awkward without it.

The curious thing is, if I open the svg file in other Vector applications (iDraw for iPad for example), they recognice the layers as layers and not as groups.
Did I miss something? Did I made some fancy settings inside inkscape or does inkscape accept layers only if they were applied in the native inkscape svg?
is there a way to automate the process of placing each group on a layer

I hope someone can help me, saving something between 60 and 100 layers of each artwork seperatly and stich them together or messing arround with groups and layer in inkscape till everything looks right again doesn't sound very funny to me...

thanks

The SVG spec does not have layers. Inkscape implements layers as groups, with some identifiers.

I created an extension to convert groups to layers and vice versa that might do what you need to fix these:

Until now I've tested it just with one file and what I can tell so far... this is damn awesome!
You saved me hours and hours of annoying and boring work... every group with their original names converted back to layers... brilliant.

Really... i can't tell how thankful I'm right now... thank you so much ^^
