0.47 selecting objects and shapes

I haven't used Inkscape in a while, but I always download the latest versions. I started using Inkscape in early 2008 so I don't know which version I started with. So i have designs that i now what to get prionted into T-shirts and I can no longer just grab and edit objects any longer using 0.47. I have been struggling using, the alt, ctrl and shift keys, do do things I used to just place on the pointer on and manipulate. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

Are the objects inside a group? Are your layers locked? You can't edit locked objects.

Are your files svg format?
