How to use create simple hard shadows

Hi all,

I am not an artist, I am a programmer. But I want my game to look decent so I started toying with inkscape a few days ago and I like how user friendly it is.

However I think my characters look a bit "meh", and wanted to add shadows, but can't find any real tutorials on how to do it (I do not want to use gradients).

in the attachment is what I have tried but I am not really happy with the results. Are there any tutorials out there for this simple type of shading? I do not want to complicate things since my abilities are quite limited. Or is there anyone in here that have any tips? Anything appriciated :)

Hello,

There is something about those black strokes that I don't like at all...

The tutorial provided above is very good.
If you have problems:

Here is what I have after reading up on that tutorial, it's getting better I think. till have a really hard time with arms/legs, and animations.

Hi.

Not much into character drawing myself, so just a basic thought. Make sure the detail level is consistent. In my humble opinion the eye and leg contour, highlight edge is way too thin compared to the other parts.

On cel shading, thid topic may have some hints.
