TIP: Creating a ruler using L-System Tool

Postby lambdaoe » Mon Nov 25, 2013 4:51 am

Sometimes you need a ruler in the drawing.
Especially if you would like to compare sizes/distances in pictures. E.g. to measure (better estimate) the hight of a building.

You can either copy an image of a ruler, or
you can use the L-System to a create a ruler.
The rulers can either be created by using some known distances, oder you create a simple ruler and scale it.

How to create a simple ruler in Inkscape:
Go to
    Extensions->Render->L-system
an enter the following Data:

Code: Select all

Axiom:  ++F-X
Rules:  X=F[-F]X
Order:  [enter the number of ticks you'd like]
Step length:  [lenght of a single tick]
Randomize step:  0
Left angle:  90
Right angle:  90
Randomize angle:  0

Hi.

Nice trick, never thought of that way to draw a ruler.
But have to say, if you want to measure on screen, you can try out the current development builds too.
At the release notes of the upcoming 0.49 version, you can see there is a new measurement tool added, which is already working in the devbuilds.

Hi.

Very Nice! Have to experiment more with L-Systems.

Another way of making scales is to use the scale extension: http://code.google.com/p/inkscapescalegenerator/

Bumping this, as you find always something new browsing through the manual.
There is a live path effect available in the current stabile version, that you can use to create rulers even from curved paths.
