Inkscape crashes when I´m working with it!

Postby Willard » Wed Dec 15, 2010 8:59 pm

Hi all!

I started using inkscape a while ago after a friend of mine showed me the potentials of this wonderful program. I have used it know for a couple of months in perhaps a diffrent way then many others. I use it to measure up construction plans for building suchs ass houses and big appartment houses etc. I am working as an Construction cost calculator / consultant. Recently the program is crashing a lot when i´m trying to take measures from my constructions plans that originally is pdf documents. It happens when i take lenght measures and area measures so not anything in specific. Does anyone know a way or how to fix this error ?

Sincerly Stefan Willard

Thought that perhaps this error code could help when issue occurs..

glibmm-ERROR **:
unhandled exception (type std::exceoption) in signal handler:
what: std::bad_alloc

followed by this

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the applications´s support team for more information

Does this make any sense for anyone ?

All known crash bugs are eliminated before releasing a new version, but we can't be sure all of them are found, more users testing the development builds helps ;)

Can you reproduce the crash, give us exact steps so a bug can be filed? Try searching first and submit a new report if you find it's a new problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/

No it occurs every now and then and it´s strange because after crash after reopening inkscape and doing the exact same thing again it 9/10 times work. I use beizer and and the make square box functions after that i go to the menu with the measure tab and put in the prefered scale that the construction plan has and choose meters as measure option and then apply. When doing square i also use object to path but with beizer i only tap enter then press apply. Yesterday when i was working on a 300 square meter big house the program crashed about 50 times while measuring. I don´t belive it´s my computer that is to slow or out of date since it´s almost brand new with a I7 cpu and 4gb of 1333mhz ram sticks. I have talked with my friend that showed me this brilliant program and he believed it might have something to do with the fact that when cad drawing is converted to pdf it creates to many extra nods which in return makes it heavy to work with for inkscape. But neither cpu nor ram is used abnormaly when working .

When exactly does it crash, when you're changing the Page size in Document Properties? Can you be more specific with the steps that lead to the crash, and can you try to find the minimum steps that make it crash, can you make it crash with a new file? Maybe Inkscape doesn't like the PDF, can't you export to SVG from cad?

I had the same issue with version 0.47. I just upgraded to 0.48 but the problem remains:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The error happens anytime either moving or editing objects, saving or importing new images etc, so it is hard to reproduce it with specific steps.

My file is quite large (~13MB) and has a few filled objects and layers. It is basically a collage of several svg images, so cloning or separated files are not an option. Inkscape get really slow when I open it and try to do anything. Though I think I have plenty of resources and don't know why this is happening. I am running Win 7 (64) with 12GB Ram, i7 CPU, 1GB Video.

Is there any way I can "fix" this so I can use Inkscape for the job??

Any help is much appreciated.

13MB!! :shock: With embedded raster images or without?
Have you tried file menu>vacuum defs? Large files often build up unused defs...
Your mind is what you think it is.

Re Willard's -- do you notice if it relates to the size of the file?
