Whaa! It's my first project using Inkscape! I've never done vector art before, it's an experience. This is a work-in-progress portrait... I'm still getting used to everything, but I managed to get all the major shapes blocked out, using various tutorials. The shapes aren't perfect (the hair especially needs refining) but I wanted to post it anyway. So here's my self-portrait, at the end of Day 1 of working on it.

Obviously the shapes still need tweaking, and I haven't added any shading or anything... (Sorry.) If anyone has suggestions for what I should make the background, though, I'd appreciate it. (Urban design? Texture pattern? Sparkly pink unicorns? YOU DECIDE!)
One thing I haven't been able to find is realism tutorials for Inkscape, or a good stylized portrait tutorial. Most just involve tracing every line of the picture, which is not the effect I'm going for, even though I used a photo as a base.

Re: Self portrait WIP
If you want to stylize anything, think of it like translating to some other language.
So, your next step should be deciding which one you`ll prefer and then search for examples. That should be the shortest way to make it right.
Unless you`re ice cool person with usually no visible facial expressions, some photo with your recognizable expression would be a better start and might make the rest of the process a lot easier. It should help you pick the right "language" and that expression would be a nice spot to start building the rest of the drawing (it could be even a photo with the glance of a smile). Don`t get me wrong, as is - your drawing is a good star, but if you`d like and someone else to recognize you - you might try with that "other language" ,)

Yes, you're right
This particular photo I'm working from has me trying to imitate the Mona Lisa, so I'll be working to make the smile a bit more defined tomorrow! I wanted a relaxed expression with some interesting fashion to vector. I ended up with this photo because of the relaxed pose and floppy hat. I'll try posting the side-by-side comparison tomorrow.
I'll be making a series of these, though, so I can have multiple laptop backgrounds! Hopefully I'll improve as I go along, tee hee.
