adding color to dxf file

Postby keegan99usa » Fri May 21, 2010 4:16 am

Ok, I am stumped, and I hope this is a simple question. We do a lot of metal art work, that we use dxf files (wireframe images) and convert these to a g-code and cut the image. What i would like to do is import this dxf file to inkscape and fill in the color to save it as a file that someone can se what the finished product would look like without actually converting to g-code and cutting. When itry to open a dxf or even a pdf file, nothing shows up. I shift select the entire window and then I can see a very bad dashed line image of what the item is supposed to look like. At this point it seems like nothing happens, the computer gets bogged down and then inkscape is non-responsive. i am doing probably everything wrong, can anyone get me going in the right direction?
Thanks
Keegan

Have you tried going into outline (wireframe) view in Inkscape (View -> Display Mode).
This should give you some idea of what paths Inkscape has managed to import.

From there I guess you can try selecting the individual or multiple paths, checking the Opacity, Line style and thickness in the fill & stroke dialogue ( Shift+Ctrl+F)

After that you could use either the fill settings or the bucket tool ( :tool_paintbucket: ) depending on the drawing to give it some colour back in normal display mode

Or open Inkscape first, then File menu > Import.

Ok, by going to the wireframe view, I can see the entire object well, and it did import good. When I open the fill and stroke dialoge box, I see the colors and different boxes, but no matter what I seem to do, the image does not change. When i hit the fill bucket tool( :tool_paintbucket: ), and go to the image and click, it just draws a thin pink line that disappears after a second or two. you suggested "selecting the individual or multiple paths, how do I select them? I have been just dragging the curser for a rectagular select and the corner arrow show up and all, but I can't seem to be able to do anything with this. I know I am probably just bugging you guys for a basic item here, but i really need to figure this out.
Thanks
Keegan

Ok, this may help. The error I am getting at the bottom of the page says:

"Area is not bounded, cannot fill."

I have no idea why this would be, or what I need todo to change it, because the lines are complete and connected, so not sure why I would get this error.
Hope this helps,
Keegan
