how to fix page curl/bend/distortion/warping?

Postby lontarm » Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:38 am

I made this post over on the GimpTalk

I want to fix the page curl on a bunch of images

what page curl may look like:
Image

I've played with the IWarp and Curve Bend filters, but they are too difficult to get exactly right.

This doesn't have to be geometrically perfect, I just want to end up with straight lines (without cropping ;))

Surely there's an easy solution to a common problem like this?

And a mod replied back with:
Maybe will be easier with vector software as inkscape (importing the image creating a path that follow the outline, and then with the original tied to the path straighten the path.. i am not very expert in vector graphic you may ask here http://www.inkscapeforum.com/ if a similar trick will work and for more details

So I figured I should check to see if
a) Inkscape can do this
b) Anyone has any alternate suggestions

Thanks

To be honest, I think your best bet is the "Curve Bend filter" + maybe rotating it a bit in the gimp, even if it is not perfect.

Inkscape has various tools that would work if the data in question was in vector format, (eg tweek tool, bend path/perspective envelope effects...) but they all rely on having path data to work with, and you are starting from a photo which puts it in the realm of the gimp.

Inscape filters could work although it would probably require a Displacement Map filter and you would still have to define the displacement map to use, which is more than I have ever done . Note that doing this is probably easier to do in the gimp, under filters->map

The only other option would be to use blender (3D app) to model the deformation and do a back projection or something extremely complicated / time consuming.

I'm not familiar with Inkscape at all, but if I could manually place a curve around the edge of the photo, would that be good enough?

Basically, no! All you would end up with then is two paths on-top of the bitmap image... Really the only tools that Inkscape has to edit the bitmap data itself are its filter effects, all of which are available in the gimp as-well and normally they are easier to use there. Take another look at what people are saying on Gimptalk, it's by far you best bet. Sorry I can't be of more help.

To see what kind of things Inkscape can do with images look at the screenshots, which isn't really what you are after...

you could try the perspective effect. I'll give it a go when I get home and post the results.

I am forever indebted to RobA over at gimptalk for coming up with a script to handle this.

In case you're interested, you can see it here:
