Merging images in Inkscape

Postby jenstar » Mon Apr 26, 2010 6:58 pm

Hello,

I'm learning how to use Inkscape and would like to merge images of some photos together for a web banner.

I realise that as raster files, photos might be better blended or merged in GIMP but I am convinced there is a way to do this in Inkscape, which I'm slowly getting the hang of.

I've been through Tavmjong Bah's inkscape book, and have searched for tutorials on this subject, and the closest I've found is from Nicu here:
http://howto.nicubunu.ro/inkscape_gimp_reflections/

Has anyone else managed to do this?
Or could point me to a tutorial I've missed?

Or do I really need to give up and learn GIMP more properly?

Thank you for any suggestions :)

Not initially sure what you want to do, but I have certainly used Inkscape to create collages of pictures before now.

basically What I do is this:

1) import images into Inkscape

2) trace round the edge of the parts that I want to keep using the :tool_node: tool, a la http://screencasters.heathenx.org/episode-033/ .

3) either clip or mask the image
3a) for "soft edgges" use a blured mask:
i) take the clip path you have crated
ii) fill it with solid white
iii) then blur the path
iv) apply the mask

4) place them like normal objects, using rotate/scale/ changeing the order using object tools

I hope that's what you are after anyway. tom

Hi Tom,

As a real beginner, that is pretty much what I am after! I was trying to use the gradient tool to fade the pictures to transparent, but that wasn't quite working.

2) Tracing around the edge and 3a) blurring was not something I thought of - should be perfect.

Thank you for the step by step points, I'll let you know how I go later!
