The requested file failed to load. Please help me save several days work!

Postby Roza » Mon Aug 12, 2019 3:11 pm

Hi everybody,

Thank you in advance to everybody who would find a second to look into my problem.
Prehistory: my laptop doesn't have a battery, just working with the charger. The charger came out, so it turned off. After that the requested file failed to open. The file contains lots of text and images.
I tried to rename it, or open it with inkscape rather than to open the file from the opened program or recently opened files. None of this works. I do not have too much knowledge of computers and it's a couple of days work...:(((. If anybody could have a look at it or guide me what else can be done with the file, it will be so much appreciated!

I uploaded the file here https://www.mediafire.com/view/3052rjvz ... 1.svg/file.

Again, thank you so-so much!!

Bad news, I'm afraid. The file you uploaded contains no data, just null bytes (i.e. every byte in it is set to zero).

You can try looking at the Inkscape preferences (Ctrl-Shift-P). Go to Input/Output > Autosave and see if autosave is enabled (it usually is by default), then check the directory it's saving into. If you're lucky you might find older versions of your file in there (check for both the filename you expect, and also 'inkscape-autosave...' files).

Thanks for your fast reply, Xav!
Just checked the properties of the file. It's 209 KB. Autosave function was not enabled...Any chance to save it still?

Please help to save ROBIN HOOD COMICS! The requested file wouldn't open but contains 209 KB

Postby Roza » Tue Aug 13, 2019 6:10 am

Robin Hood needs your help!
I made half of the story when the file stopped to open...It still contains 209KB.
Autosave function was not enabled...so no saved autocopies...but it least the file is not 0 KB...

The story was funny and philosophic...Please see the only panel left (My file sadly failed to open. png) in attachment.

I've merged this topic with the original. Please can you refrain from posting duplicate messages (as a new user your posts need to be manually approved before they go live, and there are only a few moderators on the board so it can take a while), and opening duplicate topics - it won't get you any more or faster answers than just using a single topic.

As I said, the file contains nothing but zeros. Yes, it may be 209KB in size - but that's because it contains about 209,000 zeros. If you still don't believe me, you can load the file into an online hex editor such as this one: https://www.onlinehexeditor.com/

In that editor you'll see an array of black numbers - that's the content of your file, shown one byte at a time. They're all 00. You can upload a different file to see how it would appear if there was any content.

I'm afraid that with no backups your file is lost. There's nothing anyone here can do to salvage it.

Xav, thank you again!
Sorry, I was really desperate and you are definitely right, duplicate messages will not help!
I didn't mean to doubt in what you have said,It's just last time when I checked the properties of another corrupted file, it showed right away zero, so I thought this time since it contained all these 200 something, it will be a different story...

P.S. I'm definitely not the first one to say but I really like your Greys, very funny and witty stuff!

Ironically, Robin Hood was the first comics I ever made in Inkscape and it crashed...:(((

I confirm the file is empty and nothing can be done to save this file.

Maybe you can recover previous versions of your work ("hidden" in a temporary directory or "deleted") using tools such as photorec https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec bu there's no guarantee at all.

Inkscape has got more stable over the years, but can still crash more regularly than I would like. When working on comics the first thing I do at the start of each editing 'session' is "Save as..." and give the file a new name (I just use an incrementing suffix at the end of the name). If I've done something significant, or been working for more than 1/2 hour or so, I'll do the same. That way I manually keep a series of older versions of each strip, just in case of disaster. I also have autosave enabled, to try to catch changes since the last save-as-a-new-name in the event of a crash.

If you like The Greys, you might be interested in checking out our web site. There you can download the Inkscape source files for each Greys strip (we hide extra Easter eggs in them!). We have a couple of other comic series, also created using Inkscape to some degree - you might enjoy 'Monsters, Inked' in particular.

Xav, v1nce, thank you, so much for taking time to look into my problem! I so much appreciate it!
Xav, thank you for invaluable advice, that is what I'm going to do from now on.
Monsters? I love that topic, will definitely have a look. I'm sure they are even funnier than Greys!
