Nice, I like the new look!
On the artwork page, I can't scroll, so I can only see 3 images. I can see that the forward scroll is grayed out, but the backwards (to the left) scroll isn't. Is that because there are only 3 images at the moment? Just wanted to let you know, in case there's a problem :D

"Those idiots have been staring over here for quite a while" is better.
"Those idiots have been staring at us for quite a while" is best, (in my opinion).

@brynn: you're right, thanks! i was little lazy graying out the back button too. there are just 3 images from the actual workflow, because i decided not to present you the old clipart - stuff i uploaded earlier at openclipart.org, just the new ones. i'll try publishing at least one strip a month, so there will be 3 new images in april everybody can use for whatever. since then, there will be no use of the back button on artwork section.

@druban: thanks for the correction, the strip has been revised and i changed the sentence to the 2nd proposal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzf8OpcR ... e=youtu.be

artwork is done - as usual - with inkscape and imported in blender for animation.

comment if you hate, like or dont care about it.. looking forward to hear from you.

Nice work!

The artwork has all of your usual fun and style. But I would say that there's not as much animation as I was expecting. Usually in cartoons, the action seems to be exaggerated. So I would expect the jellyfish to take up more screen space, and have more exaggerated movement. Or maybe the jellyfish or the other fish (not sure what they're called) would move either towards the viewer or away, so that it gets larger or smaller as it moves -- so that they aren't just moving straight across the screen? And maybe the rope would be be scrunched up more when it hits the jellyfish? Just a couple of thoughts though. I also understand that you have to draw a new image for each frame. So perhaps it would be too much work (and less fun)?

One thing I don't understand though, does the jellyfish have some kind of plans for that anchor? Is that coming up in the next episode?

hi brynn,

thanks for your response.

you're right, there should be more movement in that animation generally and i'll try to step up with that.

for this animation, i originally planned to do a closeup on the jellyfish in the moment of impact and more action while going down, especially tentacles flying around, head wobbling and the whole jellyfish turning and rotating. in fact it takes a lot of time to do this so i decided to minimize the effort to a managable level and step up from clip to clip.

i had to figure out some things in blender with the freestyle renderer (for the cartoon outlines), there is also just a beta-build-blender-package with this renderer at graphicall.org an i had some issues running it on ubuntu 11.04. setups for cutting and sounddesign had been tricky too (i never used blender for cutting and soundsetting before), so i couldn't spend so much time on animating the characters and the scene. having a fish swimming horizontally is the easy way moving it around, while in this case its just a 2d - path imported in blender from original svg-file i did in inkscape. so turning the fish towards the camera in 3d would require a lot of shape - keying because it is not a 3d object in blender too and you have to morph or blend the shape/svg-curve to image the turn from side view to front view.

but thats also the magic about shape keying - you don't have to draw every single frame. you just set a key frame for shape a) and later in timeline a key frame for shape b) and blender is morphing/blending the curve from shape a) to b) calculating the frames in between. thats really cool and simple, i like the simpleness of that feature. however, keying several objects still takes some time depending on how and where they are moving. for example the bubbles are keyed with 3 shape-keys each, every bubble with different shapes. i also setted up a animation-rig for every tentacle of the jellyfish (like i pointed out in the whale-character-animation-workflow i posted here some time ago), so with short time left, i just animated the fish - fins a bit and decided to move them horizontally.

the idea about this clip is the ordinary experience of struggling/stepping up and being knocked down by something unexpected. the classic cartoon pattern for this is a piano or anvil falling onto characters head. i just wanted to figure out how to do animations with blender using inkscape for artwork in jellyfish dessert style and to create a clip that follows the idea of a comic - strip pointing metamophoric at everyday experiences in life while learning about using blender in 2d - cartoon - animation.

i know that the joke of the first clip is some kind of flat and well known, the animation could be better as i was expecting it to be cooler too, but like most beginnings in doing something to figure out yourself, its that well-known struggle making mistakes and learning - maybe that's the whole fun.

Wow, that does sound like a lot to learn! I definitely want to get Blender some day. I only have the most basic understanding of animation, and I'm sure there are many details I have yet to learn. So key frame will be one of those. It sounds like Inkscape's interpolation, except that it's interpolating action rather then shape or position or style. What a cool feature!

Oh, I understand better now, about the joke. I thought it couldn't be that simple, so I thought the way that the jellyfish gets wonked all the way out of the frame at first, and then comes back up and goes down more slowly, was showing that the anchor fell on it, but that the jelly fish grabbed it, and at the end is controlling the decent, because he has some plans for keeping the anchor, for some reason.

All in all, it looks like a successful first try, to me :D

Hey there haiflosse!

Really nice job, this time you managed to use the animated gif comic in a very clever way. Actually, I really liked your idea when I saw the last to comic strips, but in this one, you can really see the potential of that kind of comic. I don't know any other comics, that are animated in frames, stick to that idea. It is clever and original! I would be happy to see the animated gifs in a larger resolution, maybe you could rethink the layout of your website.

Really good job, I'm thrilled to see, what comes next :)

hey johannski,

nice to read your reply as i am receiving very limited feedback regarding the animated strips. ok, the jokes are kind of flat but you can't do anything better than the best you can do at this point - right? here and there are some animated strips from other authors who frequently kick non-animated, saw a single animated strip on justthefirstframe long time ago (http://www.justthefirstframe.com, a webcomic-site worth checking out) so i agree, they are rare.

i've been thinking about the gif-size-issue and the possibility of delivering hd-strips for a while now. there are some points to consider, regarding my possibility to present the strips. as i am doing the strips for fun and i am not earning money with that doing (and i don't like websites with advertisement all over so i decided to place no bugging - ads), i have to pay all server-costs myself. i rented a very cheap domain because like many artists i am living at poverty level with low to no income. the rented webspace is very limited (100MB) due to the minimal hosting-fees. animated gifs in larger sizes are very big, so i wouldn't be able to host a bunch of them on the webspace and gif-format isn't suitable for larger image-sizes as i can use avi-format instead which is a better choice in this case.
so i considered linking the animated strip in 2048 x 467px as avi from the youtube-channel where the webcomic-clips are originally presented. actually, the linked target of the gif-image is the rendered image of frame 56 in 2048 x 467px which will be the avi at the yt-channel as link-target then. but i am still not convinced, that this sollution will be suitable. would be better to embed the video but regarding the issue the flash-plugin to play the videos is not a common-standard, i am looking for a better way. do you have any clues?

cheerio
ps.: austria is often in the news currently, how is the atmosphere these days? are there still demonstrations and riots regarding the fpö or did everything calm down?
