Vectorize image and change text

Postby scavenger » Wed Feb 20, 2013 6:08 am

Hi,
I have some pngs in the following style:

Image

I need this in german, what means that I need to change the text. Also I wanna use it in Latex and this means that it would be great if I could vectorize it. Unfortunately I'm new to Inkscape and don't have so much knowledge in image editing. I googled but I couldn't which functions I need to use.

How this thing can be done?

Regards,
scavenger

Welcome scavenger!

Does the image exist as SVG or at least a vector format? As a PNG, theoretically it could be converted to vector (to SVG), but probably with unsatisfactory distortions. If it exists as SVG or other vector format, it will probably be easy to change the text. But if there is no SVG or vector version, it's a fairly simple drawing, and would be easy to repoduce.

I would have said this is a job for a good OCR application. Using linux, text recognition is ok but keeping formating is a problem.

I use an old ABBYY Finereader4 from about 1998 which at one time was a givaway. Works in linux with WINE, still better than most but not as good as up-to-date applications.

A bit of preprocessing in Gimp - scaling, sharpen and just a single try in ABBYY produced this pdf.

It has flaws, needs a bit of tweaking in ABBYY, but it is editable.

I tried Fine Reader, but the result was horrible.... Hoped there is a one click solution... No its not svg. So I will start drawing...

Well, I suppose there might be somewhat of a quicker solution, than drawing the whole thing by scratch. But the result will not be 100% vector.

Import the PNG into Inkscape. Then you can draw white rectangles to cover up the existing text. And then you can just type new text over top of it. I don't know if that would be compatible with Latex, since I've never used Latex.

But still, even a computer graphics novice should be able to draw that. And we'll be here if you get stuck. Please feel free to post again, if you get stuck :D
