I feel like I have everything set up right, but there's something I'm missing. Everything is in the right order, right opacity, etc... Not sure what's going on. I don't want the shadow to be showing through the woman's face.

Could you just delete the shadow that lies across the face?
It's hard to say what the problem might be, without having an SVG file to examine. If no one can figure it out, you might consider uploading one somewhere (see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7).
