Created a drawling yesterday and saved it. Opened same file today and can not select or edit anything. Layer is unlocked

If you saved as png, it's no longer a vector file.
Is that an svg?

You can also lock/unlock objects, in a vector file, not just layers.
If it's not a locked object, then there should be some indication on what it is.

Can you share the file in question?

Just want to remind you that when opening Inkscape and if file parameter is a png image, then Save file will destroy the original png image - but it will still be an png image.
Use save as instead
